Men's Swimming And Diving Defeats Fairfield, 165-133

The Lead:  The Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team tallied eight first place finishes out of 16 events, as the Crusaders defeated Fairfield in a dual meet, 165-133, on the road in Fairfield, Conn. on Friday night.

BEYOND THE RESULTS

  • Holy Cross is off to its best start to a season in dual meet action since 2013.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Steve Tierney captured three first place finishes on the night. Tierney swam for a time of 1:58.98 in the 200 freestyle for first place, before leading the way in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.68. Tierney also placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.85.
  • The Crusaders took first place in both the diving events. Junior Riccardo Marcangeli tallied 208.50 points in the three meter dive for first place before junior Jimmy Nugent notched 202.20 points for first place in the one meter dive.
  • The squad of Tierney, senior co-captain Andrew Higgins, junior Jake Sbarbaro and sophomore Corey Manley swam for first place in the 200 medley relay for a time of 1:51.45. Sbarbaro later placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.75 and second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.08.
  • Finishing first place in the 100 breaststroke was Higgins (1:08.19), junior Mark Mueller swam right behind him in second place with a time of 1:10.25. Higgins later also took first place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:32.52 with sophomore Aaron Wong right behind him in second with a time of 2:33.79.
  • Junior John Williams was the first Crusader to finish in the 800 freestyle, swimming for a time of 10:17.01 in fifth place.
  • Freshman Christian Realbuto (2:29.10) and sophomore Kevin Lagasse (2:30.66) were the top Holy Cross swimmers in the 200 butterfly, taking fourth and fifth place, respectively.
  • Sbarbaro (55.14), Manley (55.17) and senior co-captain Alex Young (55.99) placed second, third and fourth respectively in the 100 freestyle.
  • Senior co-captain Hayden Kucharski swam for second place in the 200 backstroke (2:17.91) with freshman Chris Fusco right behind him in third place (2:19.59). Taking fourth place was sophomore Sam Devine, swimming for a time of 2:30.36. Kucharski was later the first Crusader to finish in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:42.91.
  • Holy Cross finished the meet with a second place spot in the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of Lagasse, Wong, Realbuto and Young notched a time of 3:47.29.

 UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 for the Worcester City Championship hosted by Holy Cross at the Hart Center Pool, starting at 9:00 a.m.
