Men's Swimming And Diving Places Second At The Worcester City Championship

The Lead: Junior diver Jimmy Nugent captured first place with a season-best score of 246.98 in the three-meter dive and took second place in the one-meter dive (234.15), earning Diver of the Meet recognition, as the Crusaders placed second with 921 points at the Worcester City Championship hosted by Holy Cross at the Hart Center on Saturday.

BEYOND THE RESULTS:

  • Nugent’s score of 246.98 in the three-meter dive is a personal-best record, while his score of 234.15 in the one-meter stands as a season-best performance and personal record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The team of sophomore Steve Tierney, senior co-captain Andrew Higgins, junior Jake Sbarbaro and sophomore Corey Manley swam to a third place finish (3:41.38) in the  400 medley relay to start the meet.
  • Junior John Williams was the first to finish for Holy Cross in the 1,000 freestyle, taking the seventh-place spot for a time of 11:38.97.
  • Junior co-captain Hayden Kucharski registered a personal record and season-best time of 58.25 in the 100 IM, good for a fifth-place overall finish. Kucharski later took third place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.99.
  • Tierney placed second overall and first for the Crusaders in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.30. Sbarbaro was right behind Tierney in third place with a time of 49.67. Tierney later took third in the 50 butterfly with a time of 24.76 and third in the 50 backstroke (26.58), while Sbarbaro later led Holy Cross in the 200 freestyle, finishing second overall with a time of 1:50.33.
  • Sbarbaro also recorded a top time for the Crusaders in the 100 butterfly with a third-place finish (55.28).
  • In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Sam Devine took third place with a time of 58.20, freshman Chris Fusco swam right behind him in fourth for a time of 59.38. Fusco later was the first Crusader to finish in the 500 freestyle, taking fourth place with a time of 5:13.64.
  • Higgins was the first Holy Cross swimmer to finish in the 100 breaststroke, taking fifth place with a time of 1:01.92 before capturing fourth overall in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 28.52. Junior Mark Mueller swam right behind Higgins in the 50 breaststroke, finishing fifth with a time of 28.82.
  • The squad of Manley, sophomore Kevin Lagasse, senior co-captain Alex Young, and Tierney placed second in the 200 freestyle relay, registering a time of 1:29.60. Manley additionally placed second overall and first for the Crusaders in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.82.
  • Holy Cross concluded the meet with a second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:18.68.
  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) won the meet with 1,227 points, as WPI’s Alex Gallant received the Swimmer of the Meet award.
