Result: Bryant 201, Holy Cross 99 Location: Worcester, Mass. (Luth Athletic Complex) Date: Saturday, January 28, 2017 The Lead: Sophomore Steve Tierneyplaced first in two individual events, but the Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team fell to Bryant, 201-99 on Saturday during the Crusader’s senior day meet.
Prior to the meet, the Holy Cross athletic department and the men’s swimming and diving program honored its two seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.
Tierney took first place in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:44.30, nearly two seconds in front of the second-place Bryant swimmer. Tierney later swam for another season-best time of 48.06 in the 100 freestyle for his second first place finish of the day, just 0.01 seconds away from reaching his personal record. He also placed second in his third individual event, the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.02.
Junior Jake Sbarbaroalso swam well, taking three second-place spots for the Crusaders in each of his individual events, including the 100 (54.35), and 200 (1:59.36) butterflies, as well as the 200 IM (2:01.32).
Higgins placed second in the 100 breaststroke, recording a time of 1:01.70. Sophomore Aaron Wong swam right behind Higgins in third place for a 1:02.60 mark.
Wong later finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 2:17.08 with Higgins taking third place with a 2:17.22 mark.
Junior Ethan Nightingaletook third place in the 100 backstroke (57.82), while freshman Chris Fuscoplaced third in the 200 backstroke (2:04.70).
For diving, sophomore Riccardo Marcangelitook third place in both the one-meter (208.87) and the three-meter (181.95) dives for Holy Cross.
Wrapping up the meet, Young, Wong and sophomores Kevin Lagasseand Corey Manley swam for second place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.92.
Tavish Boyle placed first in three of his individual events for the Bulldogs.
Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 when the Crusaders host Springfield at 6:00 p.m. for the team’s final dual meet of the season.
