THE LEAD: Joe Snively scored two goals for the Bulldogs as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team fell to Yale, 3-1, on Saturday in the third-place game of the Shillelagh Tournament at the Compton Family Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Yale took an early 1-0 lead when Snively knocked in a loose puck from in front of the net at 1:45 of the first period.
  • The Crusaders then tied the game at 1-1 just 1:33 later when junior forward Danny Lopez fired a wrist shot from the blue line that found the back of the net for a power play goal. Junior forward T.J. Moore and sophomore defenseman Spencer Trapp each post an assist on the goal.
  • Yale outshot Holy Cross, 16-3, while the Crusaders went 1-1 on the power play.
  • Yale took a 2-1 lead when Frankie DiChiara scored on a rebound off a shot by John Hayden at 18:40 of the second period.
  • At 9:01, Bill Sweezey was called for tripping junior forward Scott Pooley while on a breakaway as the Crusaders were awarded a penalty shot but Pooley’s attempt was saved by Patrick Spano.
  • Yale outshot Holy Cross, 11-5, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the man-advantage and the Bulldogs went 0-2.
  • At 17:03, Yale increased its lead to 3-1 when Snively netted his second goal of the game.
  • Neither team was able to score again for the 3-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Yale outshot Holy Cross, 35-22.
  • Junior goalie Paul Berrafato recorded 32 saves, while Spano tallied 21.
  • The Crusaders went 1-3 on the power play, while Yale went 0-2.
  • Holy Cross won 26 face-offs while Yale secured 25.

  • Lopez has posted at least one point in 10 straight games with six goals and five assists for 11 points.
