THE LEAD: Junior forward T.J. Moore posted two goals and three assists for five points, while junior forward Danny Lopez totaled two goals and two assists for four points as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated the U.S. Men’s National University Team, 10-1, in an exhibition game on Tuesday evening at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just 3:57 into the first period, sophomore defenseman Spencer Trapp scored on a power play with a wrist shot in front of the left face-off circle that found the upper left corner of the net, putting the Crusaders up early 1-0.
  • At 8:26 of the first period, senior forward J.T. Hall put Team USA on the board with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle, tying the game at 1-1.
  • The Crusaders found the net again at 14:28 with a power play goal from Moore to extend the lead to 2-1.
  • With 52.8 seconds left to go in the period, junior forward Ryan Ferrill tapped the puck into the net from the slot, making it a 3-1 contest in favor of the Crusaders at the end of the first period.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Team USA 21-8 and went 2-2 on the power play in the first period.
  • Moore found the top of the net to score his second goal of the game for the Crusaders just 1:37 into the second period, increasing their lead to 4-1.
  • Lopez scored his first goal of the game with a wrist shot from the slot that he fired past Joe Olen’s glove side, giving the Crusaders a 5-1 lead with 16:05 left to go in the second.
  • The Crusaders took a 6-1 lead when Lopez took a wrist shot from the left face-off circle that found its way past Christopher Marsillo’s stick side and into the net to score his second goal of the game.
  • Eleven seconds later, freshman forward Neil Robinson scored an unassisted goal after he tapped the puck through the five hole from the front of the net, increasing the lead to 7-1.
  • The Crusaders had 13 shots on net in the second period and went 1-2 on power plays, while Team USA had five shots on net and went 0-1 in their power play effort.
  • Just 4:24 into the third period, sophomore forward Michael Laffin sent a rebound from in front of the left face-off circle and into the right side of the net, giving the Crusaders a lead of 8-1.
  • At 14:06, junior forward Scott Pooley fed the puck to sophomore forward Mitch Collett in the slot, who then screamed the puck into the right side of the net to make it a 9-1 contest in favor of the Crusaders.
  • With just 1:29 left to go, senior forward Mike Barrett, received the puck from Pooley and then took a wrist shot from the left face-off circle that sped past the stick side of Marsillo for the 10-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holy Cross outshot Team USA, 47-25.
  • Both junior goalie Paul Berrafato and freshman goalie Anthony Tirabassi posted 12 saves for the Crusaders. For Team USA, Olen posted 25 saves and Marsillo recorded 12.
  • Holy Cross went 3-4 on the power play, while Team USA went 0-1.
  • The Crusaders won 43 face-offs, while Team USA won 22.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Team USA is preparing for the 28th Winter World University Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from January 28 to February 8, 2017.
  • The Crusaders are now 3-0-0 all-time at the New England Sports Center. Holy Cross defeated No. 15 Yale, 5-4, on Dec. 30, 2012. The Bulldogs would go onto to win the national championship that season. The Crusaders also defeated Carleton in an exhibition game this season, 7-5, on Oct. 1.
