THE LEAD: Junior goalie Paul Berrafato recorded a shutout as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated Canisius, 3-0, on Saturday evening at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 8:45 of the first period while on a four-on-three power play, when junior forward Danny Lopez received a pass from junior assistant captain T.J. Moore and then sent a one-timer from the left face-off circle past the stick side of Canisius goalie Charles Williams.
  • Holy Cross outshot Canisius, 7-6, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play and the Golden Griffins went 0-1.
  • The second period went scoreless as Jeff Murray fired a shot that hit the post with 1:08 remaining to keep the score at 1-0.
  • Canisius outshot Holy Cross by a 9-8 margin, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the man-advantage and the Golden Griffins went 0-3.
  • At 4:50 of the third period, junior forward Scott Pooley increased the lead to 2-0 when he blasted a shot from the slot to the lower stick side of the net. Sophomore forward Michael Laffin and junior assistant captain Tommy Muratore each posted an assist on the goal.
  • Sophomore forward Mitch Collett found the back of the net at 16:05 for the 3-0 final score. Collett stole the puck at the blue line and then sent it to Ferrill who passed it to Collett as he then knocked it in for the goal.

  • Holy Cross outshot Canisius, 27-18.
  • Berrafato posted 18 saves, while Williams recorded 24.
  • The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play, while the Golden Griffins went 0-4.
  • Holy Cross won 34 face-offs, while Canisius secured 26.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Berrafato posted his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his career.
  • Lopez has posted at least one point in 16 of the 18 games this season. His 11 goals and 20 points are tied for the team lead. His goal was his second game winner of the season and the third of his career.
  • The Crusaders are 5-3-2 at home this season
