Crusaders Earn 4-3 Victory Over Robert Morris

The Lead: Junior forward Danny Lopez posted two points while sophomore forward Mitch Collett scored the game winner as the Holy Cross men's hockey team battled to a 4-3 victory over Robert Morris on Friday night at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex in Worcester, Mass. 

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Just 17 seconds after the opening face-off, Holy Cross got on the board when senior forward Mike Barrett capitalized on a rebound from Lopez blasting a shot into the stick side of the net.
  • Less than a minute later at 1:09, Laffin extended the Crusader lead to 2-0 launching a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle past Robert Morris goaltender Francis Marotte’s high glove side.
  • Robert Morris got on the board at 9:48 in the first period when Luke Lynch powered the rebound off Alex Dagnal’s shot to the top glove side to make the score 2-1.
  • At 18:55, Lopez scored his 14th goal of the season on a power play one timer from the bottom of the left face-off circle off a rebound by sophomore defensemen Johnny Coughlin.
  • Just 19.1 seconds later junior forward Ryan Ferrill sent a wrap around from a pass by junior forward Brett Mulcahy that deflected off Collett and went to the back of the net as the Crusaders took a 4-1 lead to the first intermission.
  • Robert Morris outshot Holy Cross 12-10 in the first period.
  • Holy Cross went 1-1 on the power play while Robert Morris went 0-1.
  • Thirty-six seconds into the second period, Robert Morris struck early when junior forward Brady Ferguson snuck the puck into the stick side of the Holy Cross goal.
  • During a power play at 5:39 in the second period, Robert Morris junior forward Timmy Moore deflected in a wrist shot by Ferguson to make it a 4-3 game.
  • Robert Morris outshot Holy Cross 11-5 in the second period.
  • Robert Morris went 1-2 on the power play while Holy Cross went 0-1.
  • At 9:38 in the third period, Coughlin’s wrist shot from just in front off the blue line nearly launched into the net but was stopped by a glove save from goaltender Dalton Izyk.
  • Robert Morris pulled its goalie with two minutes left but was unable to find the back of the net.
  • Neither team was able to score in the third period, ending the game in a 4-3 Holy Cross win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior goalie Paul Berrafato made 32 saves for the Crusaders while Marotte had six saves and Izyk posted 23 for the Colonials.
  • Robert Morris outshot Holy Cross, 35-23.
  • Each team went 1-3 on the power play.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Lopez’s goal was his 14th of the season and he has now posted at least one point in 21 of the 25 games this season. He leads the team with 14 goals and 25 points. His 10 power play goals are tied for second nationally. He is also tied for third all-time in the Division I history of the program.
  • Holy Cross is 4-1-3 over its last eight games
  • The Crusaders are now tied for sixth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 20 points as they are just two points behind fourth-place Robert Morris.
  • Holy Cross’ first goal came 17 seconds into the game making it the fastest in program history. The previous record was set on October 29, 2005 against Army West Point that happened 23 seconds in.
