Crusaders Post 3-1 Victory Over AIC

The Lead: Three different Crusaders found the back of the net as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated American International, 3-1, in Atlantic Hockey action on Thursday evening at the MassMutual Center.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophomore forward Michael Laffin opened the scoring for the Crusaders at 11:48 in the first period when he sent a one-timer to the bottom middle of the net to make the score 1-0. Junior forward Scott Pooley hit a shot off the boards that bounced out and was picked up by sophomore forward Peter Crinella who then sent the puck to Laffin who converted the goal.
  • Just 29 seconds later at 12:17, freshman forward Neil Robinson increased the Crusader lead to 2-0. Junior assistant captain Tommy Muratore sent the puck to the slot where it hit off an AIC defenseman and bounced to Robinson who knocked the puck in to the lower left side of the net. Freshman defenseman Will Brophy also recorded an assist on the play for his first collegiate point.
  • Holy Cross outshot AIC 15-11 in the first period. 
  • With a five-on-three advantage at 2:31 in the second period, junior forward Danny Lopez fired a pass to sophomore defenseman Spencer Trapp who blasted a one-timer off a slap shot from the right face-off circle to score the power play goal and give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. Laffin also recorded an assist on the play.
  • At the conclusion of the second period, the Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders 9-5, while Holy Cross went 1-1 on the power play and AIC went 0-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets pulled their goalie with 5:20 left in the contest. 
  • With 1:21 left in the game, AIC defenseman Patrik Demel fired a slap shot from the left face-off circle to the bottom left of the net to make the final score 3-1. Marc Dubeau and Jackson Dudley each tallied an assist on the play. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot AIC, 27-24.
  • The Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play, while AIC went 0-2.
  • Berrafato made 23 saves while AIC goalie, Zackarias Skog, recorded 24.
  • The Crusaders won 22 face-offs, while the Yellow Jackets secured 30. 

 BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Lopez has now posted at least one point in 22 of the 27 games this season. He leads the team with 27 points.
  • Holy Cross is 5-2-3 over its last 10 games.
  • Brophy recorded his first collegiate point with an assist.
  • With the win, Holy Cross is now in sixth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 22 points, just one point behind Army West Point and Mercyhurst. The top five teams earn a first round bye in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament.

  • The Crusaders return to action tomorrow Friday, Feb. 3 when they host AIC at 7:05 p.m. at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex for Pink the Rink.
