Danny Lopez Named A Semifinalist For The Walter Brown Award

Holy Cross Athletics   02-07-2017

BOSTON, Mass. - Holy Cross junior forward Danny Lopez has been named one of 23 semifinalists for the 65th Walter Brown Award as announced by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. The award is presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. Lopez is the first semifinalist from Holy Cross since Rob Linsmayer earned the honor in the 2010-2011 season. He is the seventh Crusader to be named a semifinalist for this award in the program's history, along with Linsmayer, James Sixsmith, Jim Stewart, Patrick Rissmiller, Tony Coskren and Tony Quesada.

The nation’s oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953. The Gridiron Club will announce the finalists and winner of the 65th Walter Brown Award in March, following league playoffs and before the start of NCAA Tournament play. The award will be presented to the winner at the New England College Hockey Writers' Dinner on April 11. Thirteen teams are represented in the list of candidates that includes 16 players from Hockey East, five from the ECAC and two from Atlantic Hockey. The slate comprises 16 forwards, four goalies and three defensemen.

Lopez’s 17 goals and 30 points lead the team this season, while his 13 assists are third. He is tied for first in the league in goals and is fourth in points. His 17 goals are tied for sixth in the Division I history of the program for the most goals in a single season. Lopez leads the nation in power play goals with 12. His 12 power play goals are second all-time in the program’s Division I history. Tyler McGregor holds the record with 13 in 2005-2006.

Lopez has posted at least one point in 23 of the 28 games this season. Earlier this season he recorded a 14-game point streak which is the longest in the Division I history of the program. On Friday, Feb. 3, Lopez netted his first hat trick of his career in the 8-2 win versus AIC. It was the 23rd hat trick in the Division I history of the program.

For his career, Lopez has played in 78 games with 30 goals and 22 assists for 52 points.
