Men's Hockey Falls To Army West Point, 3-1

The Lead: Army forward Conor Andrle scored one goal and tallied two assists as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team fell to Army West Point, 3-1, on Friday evening at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Senior Night.


  • At 10:34 in the first period, the Black Knights took a 1-0 lead when Andrle sent a pass to Zach Evancho, who scored on a wrist shot through traffic from the right face-off circle past the stick side of Holy Cross goalie Paul Berrafato. Dalton MacAfee also tallied an assist on the play.
  • Each team took nine shots and went 0-1 on the power play in the first period.
  • At 9:46 in the second period, the Crusaders had a five-on-three advantage but were unable to score.
  • At 15:41, Andrle fired a pass to Tyler Pham who shot a one-timer from the slot to increase the Black Knights lead to 2-0.
  • Just before the period ended at 19:12, assistant captain T.J. Moore sent a pass to sophomore defenseman Spencer Trapp who wristed a shot from just above the slot to the top right corner of the net to make the score 2-1.
  • Holy Cross had 12 shots on goal during the second period, while Army had eight. The Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play.
  • The Black Knights went on a five minute major and increased their lead to 3-1. Andrle scored a wrist shot from the right face-off circle to the stick side of the net at 10:51 to convert the power play goal. Evancho and Pham each recorded assists on the play.
  • Neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game, making the final score 3-1.


  • Holy Cross outshot Army, 33-24.
  • The Crusaders went 0-4 on the power play, while Army went 1-3.
  • Berrafato made 21 saves, while Parker Gahagen recorded 32 to earn the victory.
  • The Crusaders won 35 face-offs, while the Black Knights secured 24. 


  • Before tonight’s game seniors Brett McKinnon (Kelowna, British Columbia), Logan Smith (Littleton, Colorado) and Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the team over the last four years.
  • McKinnon played in 49 games totaling 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 career points. He was named the Crusader of the Week as a sophomore and was a member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team. Despite an injury preventing him from playing the last two seasons, McKinnon has demonstrated his passion and dedication to the team by serving as a student assistant coach and remaining a key member of the program.
  • Smithplayed in 71 career games. He has posted five goals and 17 assists for 22 career points. His four goals as a freshman tied for 10th all-time by a defenseman in the Division I history of the program. As a sophomore he was a member of a defensive core that allowed only 2.35 goals per game which set a school record. Smith has also excelled off the ice as he is a two-time member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team.
  • Barretthas played in 142 career games which ties him for 10th all-time in program history. He has had an outstanding career with 40 goals and 55 assists for 95 career points. Barrett has posted 20 points or more in every season, including leading the team with 26 points as a sophomore. As a freshman, he was named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week and as a sophomore earned Crusader of the Week honors. Barrett is a two-time selection to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team and is a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy. 




  • The Crusaders return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18 when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army at 7:05 p.m.
