Men's Hockey Earns Overtime Win Against Bentley, 4-3

The Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated the Bentley Falcons, 4-3 in overtime. Holy Cross improves to (1-0-2, 1-0-2 AHC) and Bentley moves to (0-1-1, 0-1-1 AHC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead under two minutes into the game on a powerplay. Kyle Schmidt collected the puck on the back-door to beat Paul Berrafato.
  • Scott Pooley evened the game at 9:47 of the first when Michael Laffin won a defensive zone faceoff to Logan Ferguson. The freshman forward broke out the puck and sent Pooley into offensive territory with a stretch pass, who then shot top-shelf.
  • The Crusaders took the lead with three minutes remaining in the first. Peter Crinella tallied his second of the year. Spencer Trapp recorded his first assist, sending the puck from the point to T.J. Moore, and then across the slot to Crinella for a 2-1 lead.
  • At the start of the second period Bentley evened the score (2-2) with a goal from Tanner Jago.
  • Holy Cross took back the lead at 8:47, 3-2. Mitch Collett sent Ryan Ferrill’s rebound over the goal line. Frank Boie also picked up an assist on the play.
  • At 4:58 of the third, Bentley’s Michael Zuffante tipped in a shot to tie the game and force it to overtime.
  • Fifty-two seconds into overtime, Brett Mulcahy cashed in on his first goal of the season. After Spencer Trapp broke up a play in the Crusaders defensive zone, Mitch Collett raced for a loose puck and threw it to a breaking Mulcahy, for a one-on-one opportunity.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot Bentley, 22-5, in the second period.
  • The Crusaders finished the game with 46 shots to the Falcons’ 20.
  • Each game Holy Cross has played in the 2017-18 season has stretched into overtime.
  • Paul Berrafato earned his first win of the season with a 20 save effort.
  • The Crusaders went 3-4 on the penalty kill.
  • Holy Cross held the edge in faceoffs with 61% (48-78).
