WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, at the Hart Center on Saturday night.

The Crusaders (9-8-7, 8-4-6 AHC) and Pioneers (5-14-4, 3-10-4 AHC) skated to a scoreless first period, with the Pioneers holding a slight advantage in shots (12-11). Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the second period, but with less than two minutes to play in the middle frame Holy Cross evened the game at 1-1.

In the third period, Holy Cross scored two goals in less than one minute and ten seconds to take a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers scored a goal after they pulled the goalie for an extra attacker late in the game. The Crusaders then responded with an empty net goal to secure the win and complete the weekend sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1-0 SHU (2nd, 6:40, EV): From the left point, Alex Bates sent a shot through traffic that squeaked past Berrafato.

1-1 HC (2nd, 18:28, EV): T.J. Moore intercepted a pass along the half wall in the offensive zone and skated towards the slot to take a high wrist shot that bounced to Peter Crinella in the low slot. Crinella was pushed down above the crease, but managed to shoot the puck past Brett Magnus to even the score.

2-1 HC (3rd, 6:46, EV): Kevin Darrar picked up a loose puck along the offensive blue line and rushed the zone with Danny Lopez. Darrar passed across the slot and Lopez fired a shot off of Magnus’ pad that rebounded to the high slot. As Magnus was out of his net, a trailing Michael Laffin wristed a shot in.

3-1 HC (3rd, 7:37, EV): The forechecking work of Brett Mulcahy and Ryan Ferrill along the half wall opened up Jay Mackie at the left faceoff dot. As Mackie fell to the ice, he released a shot that hit the near post and into the net.

3-2 SHU (3rd, 18:00, EX): With the man advantage, Jason Cotton’s point shot made its way through traffic and past Berrafato.

4-2 HC (3rd, 18:45, EN): Along the half wall in the defensive zone, Danny Lopez picked up the loose puck and sent a long shot from below the top of the circle into the open net.
