The Lead: Sophomore forward Sam Girard, junior co-captain forward Kara Violette and senior forward Elizabeth Scala combined for 10 points, as the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team defeated Southern Maine 6-2 on home ice on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first period was a tight battle, as the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Girard at the 4:30 mark. From behind the cage, Scala passed the puck to Girard in the lower slot, who delivered a one-timer through the leg pads of Southern Maine goaltender Courtney Davis.
  • Each side had a power play opportunity before the first buzzer, as each penalty was killed by the defending team.
  • Holy Cross held its 1-0 lead, outshooting Southern Maine, 12-7 in the first period, as both teams went 0-for-1 on power plays.
  • The action picked up in the second period, as the Crusaders netted five scores, while the Huskies responded with their first goal of the game.
  • Holy Cross started the scoring frenzy with four consecutive goals. Fifty-nine seconds into the second period, Violette scored from the right slot with a wrist shot that traveled over the glove side shoulder of Davis for the goal.
  • Next at the 9:18 mark in the second period, Scala scored to give the Crusaders a three-goal lead just before Girard registered her second goal of the night and fourth point of the match 14 seconds later. Then during a power play with 9:57 left on the clock, sophomore forward Maeve Reilly connected with junior forward Emily Lissner to find the back of the net, as Holy Cross moved out to a 5-0 advantage.
  • The Huskies answered with a score from Katie Couture at the 13:02 mark to trim the deficit to four goals.
  • After a series of penalties resulting in a combined four players from both sides heading to the penalty box, Violette found the back of the net with just one second left on the clock in the second period to give the Crusaders a 6-1 edge heading into the locker room. During the second period, Holy Cross went 1-for-3 on the power play, as Southern Maine went 0-for-1. The Crusaders outshot the Huskies, 17-7.
  • The Crusaders continued to lead by five goals through most of the third period until Southern Maine scored the only goal of the final frame. With just 38 seconds remaining in the game, Couture netted her second score of the night for the Huskies, as the Crusaders held onto the 6-2 victory at the final buzzer.
