Jake Wieczorek Named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete Of The Year
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek has been named the 2016 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the sport of football. He becomes only the second Crusader football player to ever win the award, joining Ryan McGuire (2008). Wieczorek was also selected to the 2016 Academic All-Patriot League team, where he was joined by senior free safety Luke Ford.
Wieczorek makes his third-straight appearance on the Academic All-Patriot League team, after previously being honored in 2014 and 2015. Also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Wieczorek was selected second team All-Patriot League earlier this week. A starter in all 11 games this season, he caught 55 passes for 705 yards and five touchdowns. Wieczorek also averaged 22.1 yards on 35 kickoff returns and 13.7 yards on 23 punt returns, and finished the season with a team-best 1,820 all-purpose yards. He ranked first in the Patriot League in punt returns, while standing second in all-purpose yards, sixth in kickoff returns, seventh in receiving yards and eighth in receptions. Wieczorek caught 148 passes for 2,029 yards and 16 touchdowns during his collegiate career, while totaling 3,629 all-purpose yards. He finished his career ranked sixth all-time at Holy Cross in receiving yards, seventh in all-purpose yards, eighth in receptions and 10th in touchdown receptions. In the classroom, Wieczorek owns a 3.90 cumulative grade point average with a double major in economics and chemistry.
Ford earns Academic All-Patriot League honors for the second time in his career, after previously making the team in 2015. He started all 11 games this season at free safety, and ranked third on the team with 61 total tackles, including 53 solo stops and one tackle for loss. Ford also led the Crusaders with three fumble recoveries, to go along with one interception and two pass breakups. He finished the season ranked second in the Patriot League in fumble recoveries and 22nd in total tackles. Over the course of his Holy Cross career, Ford totaled 139 tackles, six interceptions, nine pass breakups and five tackles for loss, while playing in 38 games and serving as a team captain in 2016. In the classroom, he carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.64 with a major in economics.
Holy Cross concluded the 2016 season with an overall record of 4-7, and placed fifth in the Patriot League with a 2-4 mark in conference games.
