Holy Cross Football Team Concludes Spring Drills
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior cornerback Akeem Walcott totaled five tackles and two interceptions, as the Holy Cross football team played its annual spring game at Kuzniewski Field. The offense was able to total 311 yards on 71 plays from scrimmage, including 189 passing yards and 122 rushing yards. The defense finished the day with three interceptions, nine pass breakups and five tackles for loss.
Junior quarterback Geoff Wade completed eight of 17 passes on the day for 99 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing four times for 23 yards. Junior wide receiver Richie DeNicola caught six passes for 58 yards and sophomore tailback Macklin Kortebein carried the ball 11 times for 50 yards. Senior wide receiver Blaise Bell finished with two receptions for 48 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore wide out Liam Sullivan added an 18-yard touchdown reception.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Ryan Brady led the team with six total tackles, while sophomore strong safety Alex Johnson finished with five tackles and two pass breakups. Senior linebacker Nick McBeath and junior linebacker Kevin Bucceroni both finished with four tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup, and senior linebacker Brett Laurie posted four tackles and an interception.
Holy Cross has now concluded spring practice, and is scheduled to open the 2017 season when it travels to Connecticut on Aug. 31.
The Crusaders will look to contend for the Patriot League championship in 2017 with the return of 12 starters. Holy Cross is set to play five games at Fitton Field this fall, beginning with the home opener against New Hampshire on Sept. 16. Other key home dates will come against Lafayette (Sept. 30), Monmouth (Oct. 7), Colgate (Oct. 21) and Georgetown (Oct. 28).
