Jake Wieczorek Receives John C. Lawlor Medal
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek, a member of the Holy Cross football team, has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 John C. Lawlor Medal. The Lawlor Medal is awarded to the outstanding student and athlete throughout the college course, and was presented in a special ceremony held in the Dinand Library on Thursday, May 25.
During his senior season, Wieczorek was named third team All-America and second team All-Patriot League. A starter in all 11 games, he caught 55 passes for 705 yards and five touchdowns. Wieczorek also averaged 22.1 yards on 35 kickoff returns and 13.7 yards on 23 punt returns, and finished the season with a team-best 1,820 all-purpose yards. He ranked first in the Patriot League in punt returns, while standing second in all-purpose yards, sixth in kickoff returns, seventh in receiving yards and eighth in receptions.
Over the course of his collegiate career, Wieczorek caught 148 passes for 2,029 yards and 16 touchdowns, while totaling 3,629 all-purpose yards. He finished his career ranked sixth all-time at Holy Cross in receiving yards, seventh in all-purpose yards, eighth in receptions and 10th in touchdown receptions.
Also a standout in the classroom, Wieczorek carries a 3.90 cumulative grade point average with a double major in economics and chemistry. He was selected as the 2016 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, in addition to earning Academic All-Patriot League and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors three years in a row.
The Crusaders will look to contend for the Patriot League championship in 2017 with the return of 12 starters. Holy Cross is set to play five games at Fitton Field this fall, beginning with the home opener against New Hampshire on Sept. 16. Other key home dates will come against Lafayette (Sept. 30), Monmouth (Oct. 7), Colgate (Oct. 21) and Georgetown (Oct. 28).
