Holy Cross Partners With Defend Your Head To Improve Player Safety

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross department of athletics is committed to enhancing the student-athlete experience, and one key way to accomplish that is by promoting player safety. With that in mind, Holy Cross has partnered with Defend Your Head on the use of ProTech, a patented shell that is an add-on to new or existing football helmets and utilizes specialized material to reduce the risk of brain injury due to blunt force trauma. Based on ProTech's performance over the last two years, Holy Cross has shared its experience with the product with the other members of the Patriot League.

ProTech's uniquely designed polyurethane technology reduces impact of head trauma through absorption and dissipation of forces wherever they occur on the helmet. Led by former Princeton University linebacker Glenn Tilley and former New York Jets offensive lineman John Roman, Defend Your Head's ProTech helmet-conforming design is backed by years of research and extensive independent testing. Research supports the desired goal that the ProTech technology reduces the risk of head trauma due to blunt force trauma.

“We are thrilled to see that ProTech has made a clear impact on the safety and well-being for the College of the Holy Cross football team,” said Tilley. “Our highest priority is to ensure player safety and to extend a player's longevity in the sport of football. Using ProTech is the ultimate preventative measure teams can make to reduce a player's risk of head trauma, and we look forward to providing that reassurance for football programs of all ages and skill levels.”

“From the very beginning Holy Cross was very concerned about the care and health of their student-athletes,” added Roman. “While many technologies are evolving, Holy Cross wanted to take action today to reduce helmet collision force with the ProTech.”

Holy Cross was one of the first institutions in the country to use the ProTech helmet shells. Manufactured using a special polyurethane foam, Defend Your Head's half-inch thick, easily attachable ProTech helmet cover is custom-designed for every player and is compatible with most major Riddell and Schutt helmet models.

“At Holy Cross we are always looking for ways to improve the student-athlete experience,” said director of athletics Nathan Pine. “ProTech has helped us do that by providing a safer environment for our student-athletes in the sport of football – which is important because that improves their experience not only on the gridiron but also in the classroom.”
