A hard hitting linebacker, McGovern was chosen first team All-New England and All-ECAC after both his junior and senior years. He made honorable mention All-America as a junior, as a senior was chosen first team All America by the Football News, and second team by the AP and the Sports Network. A Colonial League All-Star both in 1987 and 1988, McGovern was the League's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. His senior season also marked his selection as the New England Gold Helmet Award winner (defensive player of the year), the Sports Illustrated National Defensive Player of the Week (vs. Colgate) and the Bulger Lowe Award recipient (New England's outstanding player). He competed on teams which compiled an overall record of 34-9-1, including three Lambert Cup Winners (1986, 1987, 1988), two Patriot League Champions (1986,1987) and the undefeated 1987 squad which was ranked No. 1 in the final NCAA national poll. After a stint in the NFL, he pursued a legal career.
