Friends Of Crusader Football Holds Annual Golf Outing & Dinner

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Friends of Crusader Football Golf Outing and Dinner took place on Monday, July 24, at the Hopkinton Country Club in Hopkinton, Mass. The event featured 135 alumni, family and friends who came out to play golf and show their support for the program.

The golf was cut short by inclement weather, but that did not stop the Crusaders from reminiscing about their days at Holy Cross, reconnecting with one another and raising money for the program. Alumni who were featured in the book Fraternity were also on hand to speak about their experience at Holy Cross and with the football program.

"While the rain may have dampened the golf, it certainly did not dampen the enthusiasm and camaraderie among the Crusaders over a 50-plus year time frame in attendance," said Larry Doyle '83. "Alumni across so many years strengthen existing relationships while making new friends and contacts as well. Events, such as the annual Friends of Crusader Football Golf Outing display why the Holy Cross family is special."

After catching up with fellow alumni at the golf outing, Doyle shared, "In speaking with Matt Martin ’84, he stated, ‘Those four years at Holy Cross were a very important part of my life. It is important to come back to an event like this and rekindle those relationships that are so meaningful to who I am today.’”

Doyle leads the football alumni committee’s efforts to engage alumni with the current players. The golf outing is one of many opportunities throughout the year for alumni to get involved. It marks the start of a new year for the program, and it helps set the tone for a successful season and a successful year of fundraising.

Head coach Tom Gilmore extends his gratitude to everyone who took part in the event, donated items to the silent auction or served as a sponsor. The outing raised a record-breaking $85,000, with all proceeds to benefit the Holy Cross football program through the Crusader Athletics Fund.

“Our alumni come together in a remarkable way," said Gilmore. "The excitement generated from this event carries us through the season and beyond. We are appreciative of our incredibly supportive football alumni - the impact of their engagement and financial support is immeasurable.”

The Crusaders will look to contend for the Patriot League championship in 2017 with the return of 12 starters. Holy Cross is set to play five games at Fitton Field this fall, beginning with the home opener against New Hampshire on Sept. 16. Other key home dates will come against Lafayette (Sept. 30), Monmouth (Oct. 7), Colgate (Oct. 21) and Georgetown (Oct. 28).
