The Holy Cross football team will open up Patriot League play when it travels to Bucknell for a 12:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 9. The game between the Crusaders and the Bison will be televised live by the Patriot League Network, and can be heard live on WEEI 1440 AM in Worcester.

Holy Cross stands 0-1 so far this year, after being edged by Connecticut 27-20 in its season opener. The Crusaders held a 20-7 halftime lead before the Huskies scored 20 unanswered points to rally for the victory. The game marked the first time Holy Cross faced a football bowl subdivision opponent since 2002.

Senior quarterback Peter Pujals led the Crusader offense by completing 33 of 56 passes for 358 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide out Blaise Bell posted career highs of 10 receptions and 129 receiving yards, while junior wide receiver Richie DeNicola caught 10 passes for 87 yards. Sophomore tailback Domenic Cozier led the Holy Cross ground game with 42 yards on four carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Ryan Brady totaled a team-high and career-best 14 tackles with one tackles for loss. Senior cornerback Alim Muhammad added a career-high 12 tackles and two pass breakup, while senior linebacker Nick McBeath finished with 11 tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery.

Bucknell currently stands 1-0 overall this season, after defeating Marist 45-6 last Saturday. Senior quarterback Matt Muh led the Bison offense by hitting on 16 of 24 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore tailback Chad Freshnock rushed 13 times for 33 yards and two scores, while senior tailback Joey DeFloria caught four passes for 25 yards. Defensively, senior linebacker Mark Pyles posted a team-best eight tackles with two tackles for loss. Sophomore defensive end Blake Fletcher added six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and senior cornerback Colin Jonov returned an interception for a score.

Saturday’s game will be the 34th all-time meeting between the Crusaders and the Bison, with Holy Cross leading the series 21-12. Bucknell has won two of the last three games overall, but the Crusaders have come out victorious in each of their last three visits to Lewisburg.

“Entering Patriot League play, it is imperative that we clean up our mistakes from last week,” said Holy Cross head coach Tom Gilmore. “It is always a challenge to go into Lewisburg, and Bucknell was extremely impressive against Marist in their opener. They consistently have one of the top rated defenses in the Patriot League and their offense was very productive in the Marist game.”

After the contest at Bucknell, Holy Cross will return to Worcester to play host to New Hampshire in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1:05 p.m.
