Zoe Matherne And Caitlin Harty Receive Senior Awards
WORCESTER, Mass. – Graduating student-athletes Zoe Matherne and Caitlin Harty each received a senior award for academic excellence and leadership in service, as presented in a special ceremony in the Dinand Library on Thursday, May 24. Matherne, a member of the Holy Cross women’s track and cross country teams, was awarded the 2018 Varsity Club Norton Prize. Harty, a member of the Holy Cross women’s soccer team, was named the recipient of the 2018 John C. Lawlor Medal.
Matherne was selected to the Academic All-Patriot League team for track and field in both the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons and has been named All-Patriot League multiple times in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. In 2017 she became only the third Holy Cross student-athlete to take part in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship, competing in the 800-meter race in Lexington, Ky. Today, she will become the first Crusader to compete in the NCAA Championship more than once, when she runs in the 800-meters in Tampa, Fla. Matherne holds school records in the outdoor 400-meter run (57.22), the indoor 800-meter run (2:08.07), the outdoor 800-meter run (2:06.91), the indoor 1,000-meter run (2:45.95), the outdoor 1,500-meter run (4:25:78) and the indoor one-mile run (4:47.18).
Harty ranked third on the Crusaders in scoring as a freshman with eight points before missing her sophomore year due to injury. Returning her junior season, she played in all 17 games with 14 starts on the year and scoring one goal. Harty also appeared in all 17 games with five starts as a senior, adding one point. Harty also stood out in the classroom, being named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll four times in her career. She has been named to the Dean’s List and is a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society and the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society. In addition, Harty is active in the community, serving as a communion minister with the Campus Liturgical Ministry, a teaching assistant and tutor with the Worcester Public Schools and a coach with the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Goals Program.
