My Summer: Mary Patalita
Holy Cross student-athletes strive to excel in the classroom, in the community, in competition and in life.
Throughout the summer, Crusaders will be sharing their experiences as they prepare for the upcoming season and for life after graduation.
Hello Crusaders! Greetings from the nation’s capital! I am Mary Patalita (Alexandria, Va.), and I am a senior on the women’s lacrosse team. This summer I am working in Washington, D.C. and am getting a little taste of what working 8-6 in the real world is like. I have been training for our fall lacrosse season and enjoying time with my family and friends. Kicking off GoHolyCross.com’s “My Summer” series, I wanted to show you what I have been up to. This is “My Summer”:
I have been working for CBRE, a global commercial real estate company, in Washington, D.C. I am working on an investor leasing team that is the middleman between landlords and tenants of office spaces throughout The District. I spend my days taking brokers and perspective tenants through our available office spaces, reviewing leases, marketing our buildings and learning from my team about the economics of getting a lease deal executed. I am learning a lot about the D.C. office market and getting to know my way around the city really well!
EARLY MORNING WORKOUTS
Here I am at the Lincoln Memorial at 6:00 a.m. with a friend from high school. We went to a workout class at the Lincoln Memorial called “The November Project” before work. The November Project is a nation-wide program that encourages people to workout by “just showing up” (there is even one in Worcester right at our very own Fitton Field!). The D.C. group runs the Lincoln steps every Wednesday morning, rain or shine, 52 weeks of the year. It was cool to workout at such a historic monument with about 100 D.C. residents.
This summer I have been keeping up with our workout packet that the coaches sent us (we all loved getting snail mail!) and refereeing youth lacrosse games to stay in shape for the coming season. Recently I did a game with one of the referees who officiated the Patriot League women's lacrosse final game between Navy and Loyola Maryland! It was nice to talk with her about our league and I assured her that she will see HC in the PL finals next season!
Living at home in the summer, I am enjoying the quality time with my family. Here I am with my older sister at a Dixie Chicks concert. One of my favorite things about the summer is going to outdoor concerts and hanging out with my family! Over the Fourth of July Weekend we went to the neighborhood parade full of little kids with their bikes and wagons decorated in a patriotic style. Later we watched the best fireworks in the country from the Potomac River on our family friend's boat. Despite the rainy weather, the fireworks and "A Capitol Fourth" production still was a success!
ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM!
Another summer highlight is going to Washington Nationals' games! Being downtown for work allows me to hop over to a bunch of night games. I am making full use of my last year using a student discount! The Nats are having a good season, so it is fun to watch them win!
LIVING IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL
Here I am with my dad biking around the monuments. It was hard to navigate around all of the tourists but we had a fun Saturday outing downtown! I have really enjoyed growing up in the D.C.-metro area and am cherishing my last summer living at home! The history in this area is so rich and I did not realize it until going to school and coming back. Everyday on my way to work I pass the church George Washington would ride his horse to, the theater where Lincoln was shot, Robert E. Lee's childhood home and of course the more famous monuments like the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Pentagon, the White House and the Capitol Building.
I hope everyone is having a relaxing and fun summer! I am looking forward to returning to Holy Cross for my final year and season of lacrosse!
