My Summer: Parker Greiwe
Hola Crusaders from South America! I am Parker Greiwe (Indian Hill, Ohio) and I am a senior on the men's lacrosse team. This summer I am working in Peru with medical professionals to provide healthcare for low income families. I have been training for this upcoming season and traveling with my brother around South America. This is "My Summer":
I have been working with Medlife (Medicine, Education & Development for Low Income Families Everywhere) in Cusco and Lima, Peru. I work with a team to help medical professionals provide patients with essential healthcare. I spend my days rotating between health stations, which include: dentistry (shown above), doctor, optometry, pharmacy, triage, education, OB/GYN and toothbrush. I have learned to converse in Spanish with the patients as well as with the people of Peru. With all that I am doing, I understand how fortunate I am and that this work is just a grain of sand compared to what needs to be done.
CONNECTING WITH PATIENTS
Here is a picture of me and Adriano, a boy from a village outside of Cusco. I have been able to make connections with the people of Peru through topics such as soccer. The kids love to play the sport and we would often join them. Although I did not speak Spanish before I came to South America, I was able to learn quickly with the help of other volunteers from Puerto Rico.
MEETING NEW FRIENDS
One of my favorite parts of my job is meeting new people from different parts of the country. I love hearing people speak of ideals and philosophies that are different from my own. I especially envied the volunteers from Puerto Rico, who always kept open minds. I will forever cherish the memories of trying to do tongue twisters in Spanish and the nights we spent together.
Peru is full of traditions, whether it is eating guinea pig or dancing in the streets for Independence Day. Medlife has a tradition of its own where three individuals, chosen by Medlife officers, will break a ceremonious bottle of champagne at the development site. I was one of three people chosen out of all of the Medlife volunteers to perform this tradition and speak to the entire staff. At this site, we sanded and painted a community center for the village.
Here is a picture of me looking at the Sacred Valley of the Inca's. One of the reasons I came to South America was to travel. I fell in love with traveling after studying in Rome last summer with many of my friends at Holy Cross. However, this time I am able to experience it on my own and with my brother. I have no doubt this will be an unforgettable bonding experience that will bring us closer than we already are. We will be hiking and traveling to Machu Picchu (one of the few wonders of the world), Rainbow Mountain, Galapagos Island and the Amazon.
I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer and I look forward to returning to Holy Cross to prepare with my teammates for my final season of lacrosse!
