Crusaders Capture Fifth Relay Record To Conclude Action At Patriot League Championship

THE BASICS:

Result: 9th out of 10 Teams (96 pts.)
Location: Lewisburg, Pa. (Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium inside the Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center)

The Lead:  The Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team set their fifth relay record this season, recording a time of 3:35.19 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to conclude action at the Patriot League Championship on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The record-breaking 400-yard freestyle team included freshman Kayleigh Hoagland, sophomore Emma Gurchiek, junior Nina Sparre and junior Katie Conners.
  • Sophomore Jenny O'Brien led the Crusaders in the 200-yard backstroke, recording a time of 2:09.50 and finishing 25th overall. She notched her career-record and Holy Cross’ season-best time with her finish and was 1.14 seconds off from reaching the all-time record.
  • With her time of 53.07, Conners took 25th in the 100-yard freestyle, recording a personal record and season-best mark.
  • Sophomore Caroline Body finished 28th overall in the 200-yard breaststroke, registering a personal and season-best time of 2:30.81.
  • Junior Maura Mullaney finished 20th in the 200-yard butterfly, recording a time of 2:11.32.
  • Freshman Leah Zogby swam the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:03.40 to lead Holy Cross in that event and finish 22nd overall.
  • Navy claimed the Patriot League Championship title with 868.5 points.

 UP NEXT:

  • Sophomore diver Casey Sherman will compete in the NCAA Zone A Diving hosted by Virginia Tech from March 6-8.

TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The swimming and diving Patriot League Championship served as part of the second annual Turnpike Trophy competition where Holy Cross and Boston University square off throughout the year. Boston University now holds an 8-1 lead.
  • Kyra Tatlow of Boston University was named the women’s swimming and diving Turnpike Trophy MVP.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The Turnpike Trophy series continues tomorrow, when the men’s and women’s track and field teams face off during the Patriot League Indoor Championship in Boston.
