Matherne Breaks 800 Meter All-Time Record At Minuteman Invitational

THE BASICS:

Results: 2nd out of 3 Division I Teams (129.50 pts.)

The Lead: Junior Zoe Matherne broke her second school record of the year, taking second place in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:09.29 for the Holy Cross women’s track and field team at the Minuteman Invitational hosted by UMass-Amherst on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Matherne’s mark meets the ECAC Outdoor Championship qualifying standards, as she earned five points for the Crusaders with her second place finish out of 32 runners. Junior Meghan Dietter took sixth place in this event with her time of 2:16.46.
  • The Crusaders’ 4x400-meter relay team of Matherne, Dietter, senior Victoria Stephens and junior Stefanie McArdle finished first place overall with their time of 3:59.49.
  • The 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore Isabella DiMare, sophomore Sarah Friess, freshman Allie Smiley and classmate Alexandra Curtin hit an ECAC qualifying time of 47.53 for a second-place finish.
  • Curtin (12:15; second), Friess (12:35; fifth) and Smiley (12:45; seventh) each hit New England qualifying times in the 100-meter dash, as Curtin’s and Friess’ times were both personal records.
  • Friess also hit a New England qualifying time in the 200-meter run, finishing in sixth place to lead Holy Cross in that event with her mark of 25.48.
  • DiMare hit two personal record marks in the hurdles. She took second place in the 100-meter hurdles (15:03) before registering a time of 1:04.76 in the 400-meter hurdles to take first place, while hitting a New England qualifying standard in that event.
  • Senior co-captain Jennifer Kimball finished fourth overall in the javelin with her toss of 36.87 meters.
  • Junior Elizabeth Lombardo ran a career-best time of 18:07.55 in the 5,000-meter run.
  • In the long jump, junior Alanna Hitscherich led the way, taking first place with her distance of 5.75 meters and reaching the ECAC qualifying standards for the second week in a row. Smiley hit a personal record and New England qualifier for a second place finish with her distance of 5.62 meters, as Curtin took third place with her mark of 5.48 meters.
  • Hitscherich later finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.24), as junior Tori Zamarra finished sixth (15.29) and freshmen Taylor Gensler (15.51) and Morgan Sanders (15.52) placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Gensler later took sixth in the triple jump (10.31 meters).
  • Senior co-captain Alexa Eldracher led the way in the triple jump with her distance 11.73 meters, which stands as a New England qualifying mark. She also reached a distance of 5.45 meters in the long jump for a fifth-place finish.
  • For the shot put, senior co-captain Cassandra Kobelski threw for a personal record distance of 12.05 meters. Senior Alliyah Veilleux additionally hit two career-best distances in throwing events, while competing in the hammer throw (43.29 meters), as well as the discus (28.93 meters).
  • Joining Veilleux in reaching a new career-high in the hammer throw was sophomore Victoria Attaya (40.64 meters).
  • McArdle (59.08; third), junior Claire Turner (1:00.37; sixth) and freshman Caroline Frey (1:00.60; eighth) each took a top-eight spot in the 400-meter run for the Crusaders.
  • Senior Caroline Carr finished eighth out of 33 in the 1,500-meter run with her time of 4:49.69.
  • UMass-Amherst won the meet with 157 points.

BEYOND THE RESULTS:

  • Matherne now holds both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run record for the school. She broke the indoor 800-meter run at the ECAC Indoor Championship on March 4 this year.
