Softball Defeats Alabama State in Extra Innings

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Holy Cross softball team defeated Alabama State, 4-2, in eight innings on Sunday, Feb. 18. Sophomore Katie Barbarick got the win and improves to 1-0 on the season. 

First inning: 

  • The Crusaders came out strong earning two runs on one hit in the first. 
  • Junior Jackie Brewster was walked and advanced to second after junior Taylor Wahler advanced due to an error by Alabama State's third baseman. 
  • Wahler and Brewster advanced one base after a pop up from senior Mandy McCarthy
  • Sophomore Sydney Burr stepped up to the plate and recorded two RBIs after a single to right field. Brewster and Wahler each tapped home plate. 

Seventh inning:

  • Alabama State scored twice to tie the game, 2-2. 

Eighth inning:

  • Holy Cross batted first, and freshman Bella Jankowski opened up the inning by advancing to second. 
  • Burr had a sacrifice bunt to send Jankowski to third. 
  • Senior Savannah Young hit a fly ball out to right field. 
  • Sophomore Sydney Behrens hit a triple to center field to add 2 RBIs and send Jankowski and Young home. 
  • Holy Cross went into the bottom of the eighth up 4-2 and secured the victory with three straight outs.
