Patriot League Softball Preseason Poll Announced

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team has been picked to finish sixth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll as voted on by the league’s coaches and media relations directors.

Lehigh was picked to finish first with 66 points and six first-place votes. Following the Mountain Hawks in second place was the 2016 Patriot League runner-up, Army West Point, who notched 64 points with five first-place votes.

Taking the third-place spot was last year’s Patriot League champion, Boston University with 55 points and three first-place votes. Bucknell finished fourth with 43 points. Colgate was fifth with 29 points, just in front of the Crusaders who took sixth with 21 points. Lafayette was voted to finish seventh with 16 points.

Alee Rashenskas from Army West Point was named Preseason Player of the Year, while another Black Knight, Renee Poirier, was named Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The top four regular season teams will qualify for the Patriot League Softball Championship in a double-elimination format, hosted by the top-seeded team. The Championship will take place from May 11-13, as the No. 4 seed will take on the No. 1, while the No. 2 seed will face the No. 3 during the first day.

The Crusaders open their 2017 season in Boiling Springs, N.C. at the Runnin’ Bulldog Invitational hosted by Gardner-Webb from Feb. 17-19. Holy Cross will play five games, facing three different opponents during this span, including Hampton, Gardner-Webb and Seton Hall.
