The Holy Cross softball team is set to open its 2017 campaign at the Runnin’ Bulldog Tournament hosted by Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. from Feb. 17-19. The Crusaders will compete in five games, taking on three different opponents at the tournament.

ABOUT THE RUNNIN’ BULLDOG TOURNAMENT

  • The Runnin’ Bulldog Tournament serves as the first of four tournaments the Crusaders will be competing in to start their season.
  • Holy Cross will face Hampton and Gardner-Webb twice before taking on Seton Hall.
  • The Crusaders will begin their action in the tournament with two games on Feb. 17. Holy Cross will first face Hampton at 12:00 p.m. before taking on Gardner-Webb at 4:00 p.m.
  • The following day (Feb. 18), Holy Cross will play another pair of games against Hampton (10:00 a.m.) and Gardner-Webb (12:00 p.m.) before, squaring off with Seton Hall at 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 19 to close the tournament.

  • Every time junior Gabby Muniz, a member of the softball team, walks up to the Luth Athletic Complex she walks by her father’s name on the Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame. Muniz has a combination of five uncles and cousins who have also graduated from Holy Cross.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CRUSADERS

  • Coming off an 8-36 overall record and 4-14 Patriot League mark, Holy Cross looks to bounce back in 2017 under first year head coach Jen Lapicki.
  • The 2017 slate for the Crusaders is comprised of 44 games, including four tournaments, 31 games on the road, 13 home matchups and 18 Patriot League contests.
  • The Crusaders return 11 to their roster, while adding five freshmen.
  • Included among the returners is junior infielder Taylor Moss, who led the team with a .349 batting average and four home runs, earning Academic All-Patriot League honors last year. In 2016, Moss additionally led the Crusaders with 44 hits, 29 runs batted in, a .390 on-base percentage and a .492 slugging percentage. She owns a .365 career batting average with 80 hits, 41 runs batted in, six home runs and nine doubles.
  • Holy Cross also returns sophomore outfielder Jaclyn Brewster to the lineup, who led the team with 13 stolen bases, while posting a .296 batting average and 40 hits in 2016.
  • Joining Moss and Brewster in leading the Crusaders at the plate is sophomore infielder Taylor Wahler who notched 40 hits and 16 runs batted last season with a .288 batting average. Also returning to the lineup is junior infielder Mandy McCarthy who tallied 21 runs batted in and three home runs with 34 hits and a .281 batting average last season.
  • Three Holy Cross pitchers return to the circle in sophomores Alexandra Held and Olivia Sloane, as well as junior Katy Watson. During her freshman year, Held made 14 appearances, registering a 5.41 earned run average and 12 strikeouts. Watson returns with the most time in the circle, pitching in 20 contests and notching 54 strikeouts in 2016. Joining the pitching squad this season is 6’2” freshman Katie Barbarick  from Santa Maria, Calif.

  • The Holy Cross softball team received new adidas uniforms for its 2017 campaign. Check out the video below to take a glimpse at the Crusaders’ new look.

 SCOUTING THE HAMPTON PIRATES

  • Coming off a 20-28 campaign in 2016, the Pirates have started the 2017 season 0-3 after opening the year with a three-game series against Elon from Feb. 10-11. The Pirates will face Bucknell in the Runnin’ Bulldog Tournament before taking on the Crusaders.
  • Holy Cross and Hampton have faced each other just one other time, as the Crusaders hold the only series victory with a 10-9 win on Mar. 12, 2016. Wahler hit an RBI double in the eighth inning to give Holy Cross the win. To read the recap, click here.
  • Hampton returns its top hitter from last season in Cassidy Blackwell who batted .376 with 56 hits, 29 runs batted in, 13 doubles and a .463 slugging percentage. Leading the way this year is Jada Fields with a .500 batting average on two hits, one homer and one run batted in.
  • Allyson Babinsack has seen the most time in the circle, holding a 2.69 earned runs average with six strikeouts.
  • Head coach Angela Nicholson is in her first season at the helm of Hampton.

SCOUTING THE GARDNER-WEBB RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS

  • Gardner-Webb is off to a 2-4 start in 2017, after posting a 21-33 overall record last season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will travel to Charlotte for a double-header and face Bucknell before hosting the Crusaders.
  • Holy Cross owns the only victory in the all-times series versus Gardner-Webb, taking down the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 10-4, on Mar. 9, 2004.
  • Gardner-Webb’s roster is comprised of 13 returners and three freshmen. Among the returning squad is Mackenzie Thompson who led the Runnin’ Bulldogs throughout the 2016 season in the circle with a 3.71 earned runs average and 79 strikeouts.
  • Head coach Tom Cole is in his 17th season with Gardner-Webb. Cole is the winningest coach in Gardner-Webb softball history with over 415 victories.

SCOUTING THE SETON HALL PIRATES

  • Seton Hall is coming off a 20-34 2016 campaign. The Pirates will open their season with Hampton and Bucknell prior to taking the field against Holy Cross.
  • The Crusaders trail Seton Hall, 2-0, in the all-time series, most recently falling to the Pirates, 11-4, on Mar. 15, 2008.
  • Seton Hall has returned 17 to their roster and added four freshmen. Among the returners is Valerie Suto, who recorded a .351 batting average in 2016 with 53 hits.
  • Head coach Paige Smith is in her fifth year at the helm of Seton Hall.
