Moore Complex) The Lead: Four different Crusaders registered two hits, as the Holy Cross softball team outhit South Dakota State, 10-7, but fell to the Jackrabbits, 7-2 in their opening game at the Under Armour Showcase on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After two scoreless innings, the Crusaders broke the tie in the top of the third inning on three hits to take a 2-0 lead. Senior right fielder Kylee Malouf reached on an infield single before sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahlercranked a triple to center field to score the first run for the Crusaders. Junior first baseman Taylor Mossbrought in the second run on a single popped up to second base, as Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead.
The Jackrabbits responded, scoring the next pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.
Holy Cross got the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, but left three runners on base, as South Dakota State found the outs to maintain the tie.
The Jackrabbits scored the final five runs of the game. First they used a four-run spurt in the bottom of the fourth inning on three hits and two errors to move out to a 6-2 lead. Ali Herdliska hit a three-run home run during this span. South Dakota State then tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double hit by Herdliska to extend its lead to 7-2.
Holy Cross got a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh inning with a single down the third base line hit by junior catcher Savannah Young, but the Crusaders couldn’t get the edge, as South Dakota State secured its 7-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Holy Cross led 10-7 in hits.
Holy Cross left 11 runners on base, while the Jackrabbits left seven.
Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Heldpitched 3.2 innings and took the loss for Holy Cross. Held recorded four strikeouts.
Abby Deane secured the win for South Dakota State, pitching a full seven innings and recording eight strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Moss is on an eight-game hitting streak. She has tallied at least one hit in nine of 10 games on the season. She leads the Crusaders with a .467 batting average, 14 hits and 11 RBIs this year.
Score: Southern Illinois Edwardsville 4, Holy Cross 2 Record: Holy Cross (2-9); SIUE (15-4) Pitching Decision: W: Emily Ingles (4-1) | L: Alexandra Held(2-4) Date: March 10, 2017 Time: 4:30 p.m. Location: Clearwater, Fla. (Eddie C. Moore Complex) The Lead: Moss earned the only two RBIs for the Crusaders, as the Holy Cross softball team fell to Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 4-2 in its second game of the day at the Under Armour Showcase.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross started off strong, scoring the first two runs of the game and holding its 2-0 lead through four innings.
The Crusaders tacked on the first run of the game in the opening inning. With a runner on third base, Moss hit an infield grounder to plate a run and give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Crusaders moved out to a 2-0 lead. Wahler started off the inning smashing a triple to right field before Moss brought her home on a sacrifice fly hit to left field.
However, the Cougars responded in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases and rallying for four runs on three hits and two errors to take over the lead and move ahead, 4-2.
Holy Cross got runners on base with hits from Young and Malouf in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the two Crusaders were left stranded at second and third, as SIUE got out of the inning with three strikeouts and held onto the two-run win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Hits were 7-4 in favor of SIUE.
SIUE left nine runners on base, while Holy Cross left five.
Held pitched 4.0 innings, recording three strikeouts, but took the loss for the Crusaders.
Emily Ingles pitched 5.2 innings for SIUE and tallied 11 strikeouts to earn the win.
Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow with another two games at the Under Armour Showcase. First, the Crusaders will take on Western Michigan at 9:15 a.m. before wrapping up the day against Canisius at 2:00 p.m.
