Moore Complex) The Lead: Three different Crusaders tallied two hits, but the Holy Cross softball team suffered a 5-3 setback against Indiana State to conclude action at the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. on Sunday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both teams played strong defense throughout the first two innings, as the score remained locked at 0-0.
The Crusaders then took the first lead of the game in the top of the third inning. Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster reached on a walk before stealing second base. Junior catcher Savannah Youngbrought her home on an error in deep right field, as Holy Cross led 1-0.
The Sycamores answered in the bottom of the third inning with an inside the park home run hit by Erika Crissman that scored four runs, as Indiana State took a 4-1 lead.
Holy Cross responded with a two-run spurt in the top of the fourth inning on two hits. Senior second baseman Emily Krisandasingled to right field before junior third baseman Mandy McCarthycranked a double to left center field as Krisanda rounded the bases for the run. Sophomore designated player Alexandra Held then brought home McCarthy on a fielder’s choice play, as the Crusaders narrowed the gap to one run with the score, 4-3.
Indiana State tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning using three hits to expand out to a 5-3 advantage.
Holy Cross got runners on first and second in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t register the tying run, as the Sycamores took the 5-3 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Brewster, Krisanda and McCarthy each led Holy Cross with two hits.
Hits were 8-7 in favor of Indiana State.
Holy Cross left eight runners on base, while Indiana State left nine.
Junior pitcher Katy Watsonpitched for 3.2 innings, notching four strikeouts and took the loss for Holy Cross.
Kenzie Ihle recorded the win for the Sycamores, pitching five innings.
Holy Cross returns to action in Providence with a double header against the Friars on Mar. 18.
