(University Softball Field) The Lead: Junior left fielder Gabby Muniz plated two runs on a single in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2, but the Seawolves scored the final nine runs, as the Holy Cross softball team was defeated by Stony Brook, 11-2, in Stony Brook, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross went down, 2-0, early in the game after a two-run home run hit by Irene Rivera in the top of the first inning.
The Crusaders responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2 with a two-hit spurt. With two outs, freshman pinch runner Carley Boothe and junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy advanced to second and third base, respectively, on a passed ball before junior left fielder Gabby Muniz brought them home on a single hit up the middle.
The Seawolves then regained their lead in the top of the fifth inning, using a five-run surge on five hits and an error to move out to a 7-2 advantage. Stony Brook tacked on another four runs, stealing home plate during a rundown play and notching another two-run home run by Allyssa Malony to extend its lead to 11-2 in the seventh inning and secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
At the plate, Holy Cross was led by sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler(two-for-three) and McCarthy (two-for-three).
Stony Brook outhit Holy Cross, 13-7.
Holy Cross left four runners on base, while Stony Brook left six.
Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held pitched four innings for the Crusaders, allowing seven earned runs and took the loss.
Melissa Rahrich pitched the first four innings and earned the win for the Seawolves.

(University Softball Field) The Lead: Senior second baseman Emily Krisandaand McCarthy each went three-for-four at the plate to lead the Holy Cross softball team, but the Crusaders concluded action at the Stony Brook Invitational with a 7-5 loss to Brown on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross started off strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning. Wahler and Krisanda each hit singles before junior first baseman Taylor Mosswalked to load the bases. McCarthy followed with an RBI single to score both the runs and give the Crusaders their early lead.
Brown then took the lead, scoring the next four runs. The Bears notched two runs on three hits in the second inning before tallying one run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to lead 4-2.
Holy Cross trimmed the deficit to one run in the top of the fifth inning, closing the gap to 4-3. Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster reached on an infield error and advanced to second base on a passed ball and third base on a sacrifice grounder hit by Wahler. Krisanda brought her home on an RBI single.
The Bears battled back, expanding out to a four-run lead after scoring three runs during the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 7-3 game.
Holy Cross rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases with Krisanda and McCarthy picking up RBIs, but the Crusaders couldn’t get the edge, as they left three runners on base with Brown claiming the 7-5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Crusaders were led by Krisanda (two RBIs) and McCarthy (three RBIs) who both went three-for-four at the plate. Moss and Wahler each batted .500, going two-for-four.
Holy Cross led 13-8 in hits.
The Crusaders left eight runners on base, while the Bears left six.
Junior pitcher Katy Watsonthrew for five innings and allowed five earned runs to take the loss for Holy Cross.
Katie Orona threw for 6.2 innings, recording five strikeouts and earning the win for Brown.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
McCarthy has registered at least one hit in five-straight games.
Holy Cross returns to action against Harvard on Tuesday, March 28, in Cambridge, Mass at 4:00 p.m.
