The Lead: Both sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahlerand senior second baseman Emily Krisandahit a home run and each led the Holy Cross softball team with a .500 batting average (2-for-4), as the Crusaders took down Army West Point, 4-2, on the road on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Krisandaput the Crusaders on top, 1-0, with a solo home run shot to left field.
Army answered with a single up the middle hit by Katie Ontiveros that scored one run to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the opening inning.
Wahlerthen earned the next three RBIs for Holy Cross. The action picked up in the top of the third inning with the Crusaders regaining the lead (2-1) with a two-out infield single delivered by Wahlerthat plated junior left fielder Gabby Munizfrom third base. Next, Wahler hit a two-run home run to left field that hit off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning, as Holy Cross expanded out a 4-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Army got runners on base and plated a run on a wild pitch to close in on two runs. However, the Crusaders’ defense prevailed with junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy and Wahler registering the first two outs of the inning on unassisted plays before junior pitcher Katy Watson came in and recorded the final out of the game on a strikeout to earn the save with the tying run on second base, as the Crusaders secured the 4-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Holy Cross was led by Wahler, who batted 2-for-4 and notched three RBIs and a home run. Krisanda also batted .500 (2-for-4) and hit a home run for one RBI.
Hits were 7-6 in favor of Army.
Holy Cross left five runners on base, while Army left 10.
Sophomore pitcher Olivia Sloane threw for 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs to pick up her first win of the season for the Crusaders. She held a 2.21 ERA. Watson came in to close the final 0.2 innings and recorded a strikeout for the final out of the game to earn her first career save.
Kristen West pitched for 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and took the loss for the Black Knights.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Watson earned her first career save.
Krisanda hit her second home run of the season and third of her career.
Wahler hit her first home run of the season and third of her career. Wahler has tallied two hits in four-straight games and at least one hit in five-straight games.
McCarthy has tallied at least one hit in seven-straight games.

The Lead: Locked at 1-1 in the sixth inning, Krisanda drove in two runs for the Holy Cross softball team to break the tie, as the Crusaders tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the 5-2 win over Army West Point. Holy Cross went 2-1 over the weekend to capture the three-game series over the Black Knights.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Black Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring an unearned run on a sacrifice foul hit towards left field by Emily Ballesteros.
Holy Cross battled back in the top of the second inning, matching the Black Knight’s run to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Junior first baseman Taylor Mossreached on a fielding error and stole second base before crossing home plate on a throwing error.
The score remained locked at 1-1 through the next four innings until Krisanda drove in two runs on a RBI double sent to center field in the top of the sixth inning, as the Crusaders broke the tie, taking a 3-1 lead.
Army had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, as sophomore pitcher Alexandra Heldentered the game in the circle and turned a double play before Muniz caught a foul ball in left field, as the Crusaders escaped the inning unharmed.
Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewsterand Wahler each picked up RBIs for Holy Cross in the top of the seventh inning, as the Crusaders stretched out to a 5-1 lead.
The Black Knights responded with one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but didn’t get any closer, as Holy Cross held onto the 5-2 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Crusaders were led by Wahler, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, registering one RBI.
Army led 10-5 in hits.
The Crusaders left four runners on base, while Army left nine base runners stranded.
Watson threw for five innings and allowed no earned runs, tallying three strikeouts to earn her first win of the season for Holy Cross. Held pitched for two innings and recorded the final out of the game with the tying run on second base to earn her first career save.
Renee Poirier threw for a full seven innings, recording three strikeouts but took the loss for Army.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
McCarthy has registered at least one hit in eight-straight games. With her two doubles hit today, she now has five doubles this season and 16 in her career.
The last time the Crusaders defeated Army was on April 28, 2014, when Holy Cross took down the Black Knights 4-2. The last time Holy Cross won the series over Army was in 2001, when the Crusaders went 3-1 against the Black Knights from April 28-29.
Held picked up her first career save.
Holy Cross is off to its best start in conference play since 2014, when the Crusaders went 2-1 against Lafayette in their Patriot League opening series from March 22-23.
Wahler batted .500 (6-for-12) over the weekend, leading the team with a .750 slugging percentage and four RBIs. She has held a .500 batting average (11-for-22) over the past six games, tallying at least two hits in five-straight games and at least one hit in six-straight games.
In nine innings pitched over the weekend, Watson held a 2.33 ERA with six strikeouts, while earning a win and a save.
Holy Cross picks up the conference action on the road from April 8-9 at Boston University for a three-game series as part of the Turnpike Trophy series.
