Softball Defeated By Boston University

The Lead: Emma Wong hit a RBI triple that scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Terriers, as the Holy Cross softball team fell to Boston University, 8-0, in game three of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross trailed after the first inning, as the Terriers took an early 2-0 lead on a single hit down the middle by Kaitlin Sahlinger with the bases loaded.
  • The Crusaders rallied for two hits including a single shot down the middle by junior first baseman Taylor Moss and a double lined to left field delivered by junior catcher Savannah Young to put runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth inning with one out. However, the Terriers found the next two outs to escape the inning damage-free and maintain their 2-0 lead.
  • Boston University then registered three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and an error before Wong tripled to left field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate the final three runs of the game, as the Terriers took the 8-0 five-inning win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hits were 9-4 in favor of the Terriers, who were led by Wong (2-for-3) who recorded three RBIs with her triple.
  • Holy Cross left six runners on base, while Boston University left four base runners stranded.
  • Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held threw for all five innings, registering four strikeouts but allowed seven earned runs to take the loss for Holy Cross.
  • Kali Magane pitched all five innings and notched four strikeouts for the Terriers to earn the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler and Young each lead the team with four doubles this season Wahler hit her 10th career double, while Young tallied of her seventh career double.
  • Wahler has recorded at least one hit in the past eight of nine games played, as she leads the Crusaders on the season with a .346 batting average, .487 slugging percentage, 27 hits and two triples.

TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • This weekend’s matchup served as part of the second annual Turnpike Trophy competition where Holy Cross and Boston University square off throughout the year. Winning the softball series this weekend, Boston University now holds a 14-1 lead.
  • Magane earned the 2017 softball Turnpike Trophy MVP award for securing two victories in the circle for the Terriers.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The rivalry series continues on April 19 when the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team hosts Boston University at 7:05 p.m. at Kuzniewski Field.
