(Eaton Street Field) The Lead: Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Heldthrew for a complete seven innings, recording a career-high nine strikeouts for the Holy Cross softball team, as the Crusaders edged Colgate, 3-2, in game one of the weekend series on the road on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross tallied a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI double to left center field delivered by senior second baseman Emily Krisanda, as the Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead.
The Raiders responded right away and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the opening inning on a two-run home run hit by Holly Geranen.
Holy Cross trailed by one run up until the top of the third inning when the Crusaders rallied for two runs on two hits and two errors to regain the lead and make it a 3-2 game. Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster singled up the middle before sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler put her on third base with a double to left center field. Junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy picked up the first RBI of the inning on a sacrifice fly hit to center field before junior first baseman Taylor Mossplated Wahler for the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice play resulting in an error.
The Crusaders held onto their one-run lead for the remainder of the game with Held picking up five more strikeouts through the final five innings, as Holy Cross earned the 3-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Moss led the Crusaders at the plate, batting 2-for-4 and notching the game-winning RBI.
Holy Cross led 8-2 in hits.
Holy Cross left nine runners on base, while the Raiders left four base runners stranded.
Held pitched a complete seven innings, and tallied a career-best nine strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA, holding the batters she faced to a .083 batting average to earn the win for Holy Cross.
Kyle Griswold pitched the first three innings and allowed two earned runs to take the loss for Colgate.

(Eaton Street Field) The Lead: Wahler tallied the only run of the game for the Crusaders with her solo home run in the fourth inning, as the Holy Cross softball team fell 8-1 to Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. in game two of the series on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Holy Cross trailed 3-0 after the first inning, as Geranen picked up her second home run of the day with a three-run shot over the left field fence.
The Raiders tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to move out to a 5-0 lead before the Crusaders trimmed the deficit to four runs in the top of the fourth inning with a solo homer hit to right field by Wahler.
Colgate then used four hits, including a two-run home run by Baillie Jorth to drive in the final three runs of the game and extend its lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim the game two win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Hits were 11-5 in favor of Colgate.
Holy Cross left four runners on base, while the Raiders left six.
Junior pitcher Katy Watsonthrew the first 2.1 innings for Holy Cross, tallying four strikeouts, but allowed five earned runs to take the loss.
Gillian Murray threw for a full seven innings, recording five strikeouts for Colgate to earn the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
McCarthy has notched at least one hit in the past 18 of 20 games played. She leads the team this season with a .366 batting average.
Wahler leads the team with seven doubles this season. She hit her second home run of the season and fourth of her career.
Krisanda notched her third double of the season and 15th of her career.
Freshman designated player Sydney Burr hit her fifth career double.
Held has thrown five complete games on the year. She registered a career-best 10 strikeouts in todays’ games, pitching through eight innings and holding the Raiders to a .107 batting average with an 0.88 ERA.
Moss led the team at the plate, batting .429 (3-for-7) on the day, as Wahler led the team with an .857 slugging percentage.
Holy Cross returns to action for its third game of the series at Colgate tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
