The Lead: American tallied a .421 team hitting percentage with Aleksandra Sochacka leading the Eagles with 12 kills (.625 hitting percentage), as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to American, 3-0, on the road in Washington, D.C. on Friday night.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Senior co-captain outside hitter Mandy Sifferlen’s 382 kills this season ranks fifth in school history.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sifferlen tallied seven kills to lead the Crusaders.Sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville had three kills and a team-best .429 hitting percentage. 
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb had 18 assists and three blocks for the team lead, as senior defensive specialist Emily Popp led in the back row with five digs.
  • Right behind Sochacka at the net was Aleksandra Kazala, who tallied 11 kills and a .381 hitting percentage for American. Loren McKenzie led with four blocks, while Kristen Largay registered 11 digs as a libero.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • American led the first set, 5-3, before moving out to a five-point lead with a 6-3 run. The Crusaders stayed within four points, fueled by two kills from Somerville (12-8), but the Eagles scored eight of the next 12 to take a 20-12 advantage. Holy Cross would get no closer than seven, as American took set one, 25-15.
  • The Eagles jumped out to a 15-6 lead to start the second set with Kazala leading the surge with four kills during that run. Holy Cross couldn’t overcome the deficit, as American won set two, 25-12, entering the break with a 2-0 advantage. The Eagles amounted a .778 hitting percentage in the second set.
  • American carried the momentum into the third set with an early 8-1 lead. The Crusaders closed in on four points with a 5-2 spurt, as the Eagles led, 11-7. Holy Cross stayed within five, until American notched three straight kills to stretch out to a 17-9 lead. The Eagles held at least a seven-point advantage for the remainder of the frame, winning set three, 25-13 to clinch the 3-0 match victory.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS

  • Popp holds the Holy Cross all-time record with 1,332 career digs.
  • Sifferlen has 1,219 career kills, which are third all-time in the program’s history. She needs 25 more kills to rank second all-time.
  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen currently ranks third all-time in the program’s history with 232 career blocks and needs one more blocks to move up to the second-place spot. She needs 11 more stuffs to set a new Holy Cross record.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner is now ranked ninth all-time in program history with 957 career digs and is 135 digs away from ranking eighth.
  • Magner is 30 digs away from ranking 10th all-time in school history in single-season digs.

  • Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when the Crusaders take on Loyola Maryland in their final road game of the regular season.
