Volleyball Edged By Navy

The Lead: Freshman setter Lizzie Webb and senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen each had a double-double, but  the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Navy, 3-1, at the newly renovated Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Friday night.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Tonight’s match was the first match played by the Holy Cross volleyball team at the newly renovated Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.
  • With 35 assists and 11 digs, Webb recorded her 12th double-double of the season.
  • With 22 kills and 10 digs, Sifferlen tallied her 15th double-double of the season and 34th of her career.
  • Sifferlen’s 430 kills this season ranks second all-time in the school’s history.
  • Sifferlen has tallied double-digit kills in the past 38 of 40 matches, leading the team in kills in the last 33 of 35 contests.
  • Sifferlen has 1,267 career kills, which are second all-time in the program’s history.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner recorded her 1,000th career dig. She now has 1,003 career digs total.
  • Magner ranks 10th all-time in program history with 831 digs this season and needs three more to move up to the ninth spot.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sifferlen’s 22 kills were a team lead, as she also led with three service aces.
  • Magner led in the back row with 28 digs, while Webb’s 35 assists were a team-best.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares added eight kills and had seven digs, while sophomore right side hitter Lynsey Petersen had six kills and eight digs.
  • At the net, sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville led with three blocks.
  • The Midshipmen were led by Maggie Phillips, who had nine kills and three blocks. Up front, Katie Patrick led the team with four stuffs, as Gaby Smith led the back row with 17 digs. Smith also had six kills for a .294 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Midshipmen led the first set 17-11 before Holy Cross closed the gap to two points, winning four straight points. Sifferlen served for three points during this rally, notching two service aces. The Crusaders scored just four more times though, as Navy took set one, 25-19.
  • The Crusaders evened the match at 1-1 in the second set, amounting a .220 hitting percentage. Trailing 10-6 to start the frame, Sifferlen connected with Webb to get the scoring going for the Crusaders before Holy Cross used a 6-1 run to take a 12-11 lead. Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen served through five points during this span. The Crusaders stayed on top, holding at least a one-point margin over Navy for the remainder of the set. With the score 23-20, Sifferlen and Somerville delivered a powerful block to give Holy Cross the set point advantage. The Midshipmen kept it close, getting within two, but a kill smashed by Petersen secured the 25-22 set two win for Holy Cross.
  • Navy jumped out to a strong 18-7 lead to start the third set. The Crusaders battled back but got no closer than 10 points, as the Midshipmen won set three, 25-12.
  • Both sides entered the court strong in the fourth set. Tied at 4-4, Navy used a 10-4 run to move out to a 14-8 advantage. Down 19-11, the Crusaders won five of the next six points, fueled by two kills from Petersen to narrow the path to five (20-15). The Crusaders hung within six points but couldn’t get the edge, as Navy defeated Holy Cross, 25-19 in the third set, winning the match in four sets.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME RECORDS

  • Sifferlen has 1,267 career kills, which are third all-time in the program’s history.
  • Sifferlen’s 430 kills this season are good for ranking third in the school’s all-time records. She needs 13 more kills to set a new school record.
  • Webb needs 57 more assists to make the all-time single season records list.
  • Mullen currently ranks third all-time in the program’s history with 237 career blocks. She needs seven more stuffs to set a new Holy Cross record.
  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp holds the Holy Cross all-time record with 1,350 career digs.
  • Magner is ranked ninth all-time in program history with 1,003 career digs and is 89 digs away from ranking eighth.
  • Sifferlen has 829 career digs and is 64 digs away from ranking 10th all-time in the school’s history.

  • Holy Cross returns to the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. when the Crusaders host Lafayette.
