Volleyball Rallies For Four Set Victory Over Lafayette At Home

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen tallied her 16th double-double of the season to lead the Holy Cross volleyball team to a four-set victory over Lafayette at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Saturday.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE.

  • With her 18 kills tonight, Sifferlen now has 448 kills this season, setting a new school record for single season kills.
  • With a team lead of 18 kills and 19 digs, Sifferlen tallied her 16th double-double of the season and 35th of her career.
  • Sifferlen has tallied double-digit kills in the past 39 of 41 matches, leading the team in kills in the last 34 of 36 contests.
  • Sifferlen has 1,285 career kills, which are second all-time in the program’s history.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Crusaders accumulated a .223 team hitting percentage. Joining Sifferlen in leading the offense was freshman outside hitter Alessandra Vasquez who recorded a season-best 10 kills and six digs with a .206 hitting percentage.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Kristen Somerville led the Crusaders with six stuffs at the net, registering eight kills with a team-best .571 hitting percentage.
  • In the back row, Magner had 14 digs, while senior defensive specialist Emily Popp was just behind her with 13.
  • The Leopards were led by Jet Manzi who had a double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs. Tori Smith also had a double-double for Lafayette, including 13 assists and 11 digs.  As a libero, Katie Kidder led the back row with 26 digs.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set was a hard fought battle by both sides, as it remained within a one-point margin. Tied at 11-11, the Crusaders tallied four straight points to take a 15-11 lead. Holy Cross held its lead until the Leopards knotted the set at 19-19. Lafayette took five of the remaining eight points to win set one, 25-22.
  • Trailing 10-6 in the second set, the Crusaders won the following seven of 10 points, carried by two kills from Somerville to tie the score, 13-13. The set stayed within at least three points for the remainder of the set. Locked at 24-24, Holy Cross won the next point before sophomore right side hitter Lynsey Petersen smashed a kill to give the Crusaders the 26-24 second set win.
  • Holy Cross entered the court strong in the third set, amassing a .273 hitting percentage and jumping out to a 15-9 advantage. Freshman setter Lizzie Webb  served through three points with one service ace, while Magner served through four points and had a sole service ace during this run. The Leopards battled back to close the gap to one point, with the score 18-17 before bringing the set to a tie at 21-21. However, the Crusaders then won-out the final four points with Sifferlen leading the way with two kills and an assisted block, as Holy Cross moved ahead 2-1 in the match with the 25-21 set three win.
  • Holy Cross carried the momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to a 12-8 lead. The Leopards got within three before Mullen served for six consecutive points, recording two service aces, as Holy Cross moved out to an 18-11 lead. The Crusaders refused to look back from there, taking the fourth set, 25-17 and clinching the 3-1 match victory.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME RECORDS

  • Webb needs 19 more assists to make the all-time single season records list.
  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen currently ranks second all-time in the program’s history with 241 career blocks. She needs two more stuffs to set a new Holy Cross record.
  • Popp holds the Holy Cross all-time record with 1,363 career digs.
  • Magner is ranked ninth all-time in program history with 1,016 career digs and is 76 digs away from ranking eighth.
  • Sifferlen has 848 career digs and is 45 digs away from ranking 10th all-time in the school’s history.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross returns to the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex next weekend for the Crusaders’ final two regular season matches. Holy Cross will first face Bucknell at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 before taking on Lehigh the following day at 4:05 p.m. for the Crusaders’ senior day match.
