The Lead: Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen set a new Holy Cross all-time record with 245 career blocks, posting  a team leading four blocks at the net for the Holy Cross volleyball team, as the Crusaders swept Bucknell for the second time this season in Worcester on Friday night.

  • The last time Holy Cross swept Bucknell in two matches on the year was during the 1990 season.
  • With nine wins this season, Holy Cross has notched its most victories since 2011, when the team went 10-21.
  • Mullen ranks first all-time for Holy Cross with 245 career blocks.
  • With 37 assists and 11 digs, freshman setter Lizzie Webb recorded her 13th career double-double.
  • Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen has tallied double-digit kills in the past 40 of 42 matches, leading the team in kills in the last 35 of 37 contests.
  • Freshman outside hitter Alessandra Vasquez led Holy Cross with a team-best and career high 18 digs in the back row.
  • With her 37 assists tonight, Webb now ranks 10th all-time in the school’s record book with 821 assists this season. She needs five more to move up to the ninth spot and 15 more to be ranked eighth all-time.

  • As a team, Holy Cross recorded a .227 hitting percentage, while holding the Bison to hitting just .053. Sifferlen registered 25 kills and a .358 hitting percentage to lead the Crusaders.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner added 16 digs to the victory, while Webb’s assists were a team-best.
  • Right behind Mullen at the net was sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville, who tallied three stuffs.
  • The Bison were led by Jordan Walker with seven kills, as Rebecca Forbes and Hailey Stout each had seven digs to share the team lead in the back row.

  • The Crusaders entered the court with energy right from the start, jumping out to a 12-8 lead in the opening set. Ahead 16-9, senior defensive specialist Emily Popp served through six consecutive points, as Sifferlen picked up three kills during this run to help the Crusaders to a 20-10 advantage. The Bison would score just two more times, as Holy Cross won set one, 25-12.
  • Holy Cross brought the momentum into the second set, holding a 7-3 lead, carried by three kills delivered by Sifferlen. The Bison got within three, but with Holy Cross ahead 12-9, the Crusaders used a 4-2 run to stretch out to a 16-11 advantage with Popp serving through three of those points, recording a service ace during that span. Leading by five with a 20-15 mark, the Crusaders would let Bucknell get no closer than four points, as Sifferlen connected with Webb on the last point to take the second set, 25-18. Holy Cross entered the locker room leading 2-0 in the match, amassing a team cumulative hitting percentage of .222.
  • The third set was a tight battle, as the match remained close up until the score was locked at 18-18. Holy Cross then won seven of the last nine points, fueled by two kills from Sifferlen and a service ace and kill by Vasquez to capture set three, 25-20, and secure the 3-0 match victory.

  • Popp holds the Holy Cross all-time record with 1,372 career digs.
  • Sifferlen’s 473 kills this season is a Holy Cross all-time record.
  • Magner is ranked ninth all-time in program history with 1,032 career digs and is 60 digs away from ranking eighth.
  • Magner now ranks sixth all-time in program history with 411 digs this season. She needs five more digs to move up to the fifth-place spot.
  • Sifferlen’s 1,310 career kills rank second all-time in program history.

  • Prior to the match against Lehigh tomorrow at 4:05 p.m., the Holy Cross athletic department and the volleyball program will honor its two seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.
  • The two seniors include Popp and Sifferlen.
