WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross volleyball team is set to travel to Brooklyn, N.Y., to compete in the Blackbird Invitational hosted by LIU Brooklyn. In addition to the Crusaders, the LIU Blackbirds will welcome the George Washington Colonials and University of South Florida Bulls to the New York borough. Each team will play three matches on Sept. 7-8 at the Steinburg Wellness Center.
Head coach Melissa Batie-Smoose looks to build off the two tournaments the team has already played and focus on the things she knows they can control.
"We had a really great week of practice leading up to the Blackbird Invitational," Batie-Smoose said. "We are refocused and we are going into the weekend knowing that we can beat these teams if we control our play and mentality on the court. A lot of things are coming together, and we hope to compete at a high level on Friday and Saturday."
LOOKING AT LIU BROOKLYN
LIU Brooklyn is 2-4 on the season after competiting in the UNLV Invitational and the Nike Portland Invitational. The Blackbirds won the first match of the season against Southern Utah University (3-0) and also defeated Montana State University (3-2). LIU Brooklyn won the North Eastern Conference last season after defeating Central Connecticut State in the championship match. In the NCAA tournament, Washington won the opening match against the Blackbirds (3-0).
TAKING ON GEORGE WASHINGTON
The Colonials stand at 2-3 on the season after taking on local opponents, American and Howard, and traveling to Peoria, Ill., to face Toledo, Western Illinois and Bradley. George Washington topped Toledo and Western Illinois in the CEFCU Invitational. In the 2017 season, the Colonials lost in the Atlantic 10 Championship to Dayton.
SCOUTING SOUTH FLORIDA
The Bulls are the only team in the Blackbird Invitational with a winning record at the start of this season. USF hosted a tournament on Aug. 24-25 and swept the competition, San Jose State University, Jacksonville State and Stony Brook. On Aug. 31-Sept. 1, USF traveled to Baton Rouge, La., to take on Duke, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and LSU. The Bulls went 2-1, only falling to the Blue Devils.
