Volleyball 2015 Season In Review

The Holy Cross volleyball team finished its 2015 campaign with a 7-22 overall record and a 4-12 record in the Patriot League.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Crusaders shined at the UMass Lowell Invitational in early September, notching a pair of 3-0 victories over Quinnipiac and UMass Lowell.
  • Holy Cross also earned a non-conference victory against Hartford at the Central Connecticut Invitational on Sep. 19.
  • In Patriot League play, Holy Cross earned wins over Navy on Oct. 9 (3-2) and Loyola (Md.) on Oct. 31 (3-0). The Crusaders also earned a season sweep of Lafayette with a 3-0 victory on Oct. 10 and a 3-2 win on Nov. 6. It was the first time Holy Cross had swept the Leopards since 2011.

SEASON AWARDS:

  • Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, as well as Second Team All-Patriot League.
  • Sifferlen and freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) were named Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Week on Oct. 12. It was the first time in program history that the Crusaders had swept the Patriot League weekly awards.
  • Sifferlen was named to the All-Tournament Teams at the Hampton Inn-vitational, UMass Lowell Invitational and Central Connecticut Invitational.
  • Sophomore Mary Mullen (Mendota Heights, Minn.) was named to the Fairfield Invitational All-Tournament Team.
  • Junior Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was named to the UMass Lowell Invitational All-Tournament Team.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross posted a total of 1,185 kills this season, which is the most since the 2010 season. It is also tied for fifth-best in program history with the Crusaders’ 2002 season.
  • The Crusaders posted 1,105 assists this season, which is third-best in team history and the most since 2010.
  • Holy Cross earned 201.5 blocks, which is the most since 1991.

EARNING THEIR SPOT IN THE RECORD BOOKS:

  • Sifferlen concluded the season with 410 kills, which are the second most in program history. She is only the second Crusader to record 400 kills or more in a season. Megan Lynch did it twice as she tallied 442 in 2010 to set the school record and she had 405 in 2011. Her 3.83 kills per set led the Patriot League this season and are sixth all-time in program history. Sifferlen now has 837 kills in her career, which are fifth-best in program history.
  • Mullen totaled 96 blocks this season, which are fifth-best in school history. Her 0.96 blocks per set are fourth all-time in school history, and were seventh in the Patriot League this season.
  • Magner had 409 digs this season which are sixth all-time in program history. Her 4.22 digs per set are fourth all-time and were third in the Patriot League this season.
  • Junior Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) finished the season ninth in the Patriot League with 5.44 assists per set, while freshman Caroline Wells (Greensboro, N.C.) was 10th in the league at 5.38. McKernan now has 1,687 career assists, which are fifth-best in program history.
  • Junior Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) now has 1,149 career digs, which are sixth-best in school history.

CRUSADERS HONOR SENIOR EMILY OLIVER

  • Before the volleyball team's 3-0 win versus Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, Oct. 31, senior Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) was recognized for her hard work and dedication to the program on and off the court on Senior Night.
  • Oliver appeared in 99 matches in her career, and posted 609 career kills. She ranked in the top four on the team in kills per set all four seasons. Oliver was a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy for three years, and served as a 360 leader with the program this year. She also earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades every year.
