Baseball Falls To Southern California On Sunday

The Lead: The Holy Cross baseball team fell to Southern California by a score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • USC had a strong start in the first inning, bringing home a pair of runs on three hits to take the first lead of the game.
  • The Trojans extended their lead with a run off a sacrifice fly in the third to make it 3-0.
  • Holy Cross responded in the fifth inning, adding a run as sophomore Travis Cloney scored off an error to get the Crusaders on the board.
  • After USC added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Holy Cross responded with a run in the next inning off a sacrifice fly from freshman Chris Rinaldi, but the Crusaders were unable to cut the deficit any further.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • USC outhit the Crusaders 10-5.
  • Holy Cross left nine runners on base, while the Trojans left six.
  • Senior Justin Finan took the loss for the Crusaders, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits.
  • Marrick Crouse earned the win for the Trojans, allowing two runs in five innings pitched.
  • Sophomore Kellen McCormick led the Crusaders’ offense, hitting 2-for-4 on the day.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross is scheduled to be back in action this Tuesday, as they take on Boston College in Worcester at 5:05 p.m.
