Pitchers Shine As Baseball Earns Two Wins At Army West Point

The Lead: Senior Brendan King pitched seven scoreless innings as Holy Cross defeated Army West Point 2-0 in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.


  • Holy Cross got off to a quick start offensively, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior Bill Schlich hit a home run over the left field fence in the first at-bat of the game.
  • The Black Knights threatened to score in the fifth inning, putting two runners in scoring position with two outs. With runners on second and third, King earned a strike out to end the inning.
  • The Crusaders added their second run in the top of the seventh inning, as junior Cam O'Neill scored off a wild pitch.
  • King pitched a perfect final frame in the bottom of seventh to close out the win, earning two strike outs before forcing the final out on a ground out.


  • The Black Knights outhit Holy Cross 5-4.
  • The Crusaders left five runners on base, while Army left seven.
  • King earned the win, pitching seven scoreless innings while earning eight strikeouts.
  • Jacob Carte took the loss for the Black Knights, allowing two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.

The Lead: The Crusaders’ offense impressed in game two Saturday, posting 16 runs as Holy Cross earned its second win over the Black Knights. 


  • Holy Cross got the scoring started in the third inning, as senior Josh Hassell brought home freshman Chris Rinaldi with an RBI single.
  • The Crusaders kept their offense rolling in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. O’Neill brought home two runners with a double to left center before senior Alex Voitik brought home a run with double down the left field line.
  • Army added its only run of the game in the fourth inning before Holy Cross added four more in the fifth as junior Thomas Russo (2), Voitik both earned RBIs before Russo found his way to home plate on a wild pitch.
  • Holy Cross didn’t let up as they scored seven more runs in the seventh. O’Neill, Russo (2) and Schlich drove in runs before freshman Austin Masel hit a three-run homer to right field.
  • The Crusaders added another run to cement the final score in the ninth inning, as freshman Seth Learned scored off an error.


  • Holy Cross outhit the Black Knights 17-4.
  • The Crusaders left six runners on base, while Army left three.
  • Senior Phil Reese earned the win, allowing one run in seven innings with four hits.
  • Jeremy Mortensen took the loss for the Black Knights, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
  • Russo went 2-for-5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored.


  • This was the most runs scored by Holy Cross in a game since March 23, 2014, when the Crusaders defeated Yale 16-6.
  • Schlich’s home run was his second of the season, and the seventh of his career.
  • Masel’s homer was his third of the year. He now leads the Crusaders with a .331 batting average.


  • Holy Cross is set to return to action tomorrow, as they conclude their series at Army West Point, with game one slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
