Senior Anthony Critelli has had many big hits for Holy Cross during his outstanding four-year career — a walk-off home run against Lehigh in the 2015 Patriot League Tournament semifinals comes to mind — and his two-run single in the decisive eighth inning of last Saturday's PL semifinal series clinching win over Army was the latest.
Critelli's hard grounder through the right side drove in senior Bill Schlich and freshman Jared Enders, highlighted HC's four-run eighth and helped the Crusaders to a come-from-behind, 5-4 win in Game 2.
“It's definitely up there,” Critelli said of the critical single before Tuesday's practice at Fitton Field. “It was a special moment, and I was just happy to be able to do something to help the team.”
Critelli homered in HC's 8-2 Game 1 victory over Army. The series sweep put Holy Cross in the Patriot League championship series for the second straight year and fifth time since 2010.
HC, the No. 2 seed in the tourney, will host No. 4 seed Bucknell in a best-of-three championship series this weekend. Game 1 is at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by Game 2 at noon Saturday, and Game 3, if necessary, at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Holy Cross will be seeking its first Patriot League title and first NCAA Tournament berth since 1978.
