Crusaders Suffer 56-53 Setback At New Hampshire

  • The Lead: New Hampshire’s Tanner Leissner hit a three-point field goal with 43.8 seconds remaining, to break a 51-51 tie and lift the Wildcats to a 56-53 victory over the Holy Cross men’s basketball team at Lundholm Gymnasium.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, sophomore forward Karl Charles was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • Charles totaled 16 points, three rebounds and three assists on the evening.
  • He hit five of nine field goal attempts and five of six free throws in the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders were only able to connect on 35.2 percent of their field goal attempts and 50.0 percent of their free throws on the night.
  • New Hampshire managed to hit 41.7 percent of its shots from the floor and 60.0 percent at the charity stripe.
  • The Wildcats also held a 43-29 rebounding advantage.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Daniel Dion led New Hampshire with 18 points, five boards and two assists.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders opened the game with a quick 7-0 run, as Charles scored all seven points.
  • Holy Cross eventually led by as many as 12 points (17-5), and was still up by 11 (21-10) with 7:36 left in the half.
  • New Hampshire then went on a 10-3 to get back into the game, before the Crusaders took a 31-24 advantage into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross began the second half by scoring the first five points to extend its lead back to double figures (36-24).
  • The Crusaders were still up by seven (42-35) with 11:34 remaining, when the Wildcats went on a 16-2 run to claim their first lead of the night (51-44).
  • Charles scored the next seven points to tie the score at 51-51, before Leissner’s three-pointer put New Hampshire back in front for good.
  • A layup by Charles brought Holy Cross to within one point, but Dion hit both ends of a one-and-one to give the Wildcats a three-point victory.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when it travels to Maine for a 5:30 p.m. game.
