  • The Lead: Senior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 16 points, six rebounds and three steals, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Maine 55-53 at the Cross Insurance Center.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He connected on seven of 14 field goal attempts on the night.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Black Bears made just 37.5 percent of their field goal attempts and 63.6 percent of their free throws, but were able to knock down 12 of 28 shots from three-point range.
  • The Crusaders made 40.0 percent of their shots from the floor and 84.6 percent at the charity stripe, while connecting on just two of 11 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.
  • Maine also held a 41-24 rebounding advantage.
  • Senior guard Robert Champion finished the night with 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
  • Ryan Bernstein and Ikler Er led the Black Bears with 12 points each.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened the game with a basket by Alexander, before Maine scored the next 12 points to claim a 10-point lead (12-2).
  • The Black Bears would lead by as many as 14 points (32-18 with 2:01 left in the half), and eventually took a 32-22 advantage into the locker room.
  • Maine stayed in front early in the second half, and was up 44-30 with 12:26 remaining.
  • The Crusaders then went on a 9-0 run to get back into the game, including five points by sophomore guard Matt Zignorski.
  • The Black Bears were still up by seven (52-45) with 3:31 left to play, when a 7-2 Holy Cross spurt made it a two-point game.
  • The Crusaders had possession down 54-52 with less than 30 seconds remaining, but were unable to convert on the offensive end.
  • Maine then held on for the victory, despite making just one of three free throw attempts in the final 20 seconds.
