Crusaders Fall At Rhode Island

  • The Lead: Senior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 15 points, two rebounds and two steals, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Rhode Island 65-54 at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the contest, Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • During the game, Alexander became the 50th 1,000-point scorer in school history.
  • He scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career when he knocked down the front end of a one-and-one with 5:19 remaining in the first half.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Rams made 50.0 percent of their field goal attempts and 73.7 percent of their free throws on the afternoon, in addition to holding a 36-19 rebounding advantage.
  • Holy Cross hit 43.2 percent of its shots from the floor and 65.0 percent at the charity stripe.
  • Freshman forward Karl Charles finished the day with 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
  • Rhode Island was led by Jared Terrell with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders started the game by jumping out to an early 8-3 lead after the first three and a half minutes of play.
  • The Rams then scored the next 14 points, to claim a 17-8 advantage with 10:34 left in the first half.
  • Rhode Island eventually extended its lead to 14 points (30-16) with two minutes remaining before the break, but Holy Cross closed out the half with a 6-0 run to trim the margin to eight (30-22) heading into the locker room.
  • The Crusaders opened the second half with a 6-2 spurt to close to within four points (32-28) with 18 minutes remaining.
  • The Rams were able to build their lead back up to 11 points (49-38) at the 10-minute mark, before an 8-2 Holy Cross run made the score 51-46 with 6:14 left to play.
  • But Terrell scored six straight points to put Rhode Island back up by 11 (57-46), and the Crusaders would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 21, when it travels to Sacred Heart for a 7:00 p.m. game.
