Holy Cross Holds Off Sacred Heart 72-67

  • The Lead: Senior forward Malachi Alexander scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 72-67 victory over Sacred Heart at the William H. Pitt Center.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the contest, Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • In addition to his 38 points, Alexander pulled down 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
  • He hit 13 of 17 field goal attempts on the night, including seven of eight shots from three-point range, while knocking down five of six free throws.
  • Alexander’s 38 points were the most by a Holy Cross player in a single-game since Kevin Hamilton scored 38 points against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Dec. 19, 2005.
  • He also tied the school single-game record with his seven three-pointers made.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made 50.0 percent of their field goal attempts and 81.3 percent of their free throws as a team.
  • Sacred Heart was able to connect on 42.4 percent of its shots from the floor and 76.9 percent of its attempts at the charity stripe.
  • Senior guard Robert Champion finished the game with 10 points, three steals and two rebounds.
  • Joseph Lopez led the Pioneers with 22 points and 10 boards.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened the game by jumping out to an early 10-6 lead after the first four minutes of play.
  • Sacred Heart scored the next seven points to pull in front, and was later up 20-14 with 11:50 left in the first half.
  • The Crusaders then went on a 12-3 run to re-claim the lead (26-23).
  • Holy Cross would eventually go in front by as many as eight points late in the half, before taking a 41-35 advantage into the locker room.
  • The score stayed close early in the second half, and the Crusaders were up 47-46 with 14 minutes remaining.
  • Holy Cross then went on a 7-0 run to go back in front by eight, and was still up 65-57 with 3:49 left to play.
  • The Pioneers responded with a 10-2 spurt of their own, tying the game at 67-67 with 44.3 seconds remaining on a three-pointer by Sean Hoehn.
  • But on the Crusaders’ next possession, Alexander scored in the paint to put Holy Cross back in front for good.
  • Holy Cross went on to hit three of four free throws in the final 10 seconds to hold on for the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • With the victory, the Crusaders improved to 8-5 all-time against the Pioneers.
  • Sophomore forward Jehyve Floyd pulled down a career-high seven rebounds, and tied his career high with three blocked shots.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Dec. 23, when it plays host to Marist at 12:05 p.m.
