Crusaders Edged By Boston University

  • The Lead: Senior guard Robert Champion scored a game-high 18 points, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Boston University 61-55 at Case Gymnasium.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • In addition to his 18 points, he posted five rebounds and three steals on the evening.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross made just 31.6 percent of its field goal attempts and 33.3 percent of its three-pointers in the game.
  • The Terriers were able to connect on 42.0 percent of their shots from the floor, while holding a 47-27 rebounding advantage.
  • Senior center Matt Husek finished the night with a season-high 14 points, four rebounds and two assists.
  • Boston University was led by Eric Fanning with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Justin Alston totaled 13 points and 15 rebounds.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Terriers opened the game by jumping out to an early 11-6 lead after the first three minutes of play.
  • Holy Cross responded by scoring the next 12 points to claim an 18-11 advantage, and would eventually go in front by nine points (21-12).
  • Boston University then used a 9-1 run to get back in the game, and went on to re-claim the lead (33-32) heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • The Crusaders pulled back in front early in the second half, and held a 45-42 advantage with 14:47 left to play.
  • Holy Cross then went cold from the floor, as the Terriers used a 14-3 spurt to pull in front by eight (56-48) with four minutes remaining.
  • The Crusaders were able to close to within three points (58-55) following a three-point play by senior forward Malachi Alexander with 52.5 seconds left.
  • But Holy Cross would not score again, as Boston University hit three of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold on for the victory.

 

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers was part of the second annual Turnpike Trophy competition, in which Boston University now holds a 6-1 lead.
  • Alston was selected as the game’s Turnpike Trophy MVP.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The next Turnpike Trophy match-up comes from Feb. 15-18, when the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams face off during the Patriot League Championship in Lewisburg, Pa.
