Men's Basketball Earns 63-62 Victory Over Loyola (Md.)

THE BASICS:

 

  • Score:  Holy Cross 63, Loyola (Md.) 62
  • Records: Holy Cross 15-15, 9-8 PL; Loyola 14-14, 8-9 PL
  • Location: Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex, Worcester, Mass.
  • Date: February 22, 2017
  • The Lead: With the game tied 62-62, senior guard Anthony Thompson hit a free throw with 3.9 seconds left as the Holy Cross men’s basketball team defeated Loyola (Md.) 63-62, on Wednesday night.

 

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, senior forward Malachi Alexander was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • He led the team with 15 points and totaled four rebounds.
  • He was also a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. 

                                                    

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

  • After winning the jump ball, Loyola went on a 5-0 run before senior center Matt Husek got the Crusaders on the board with a basket from underneath with 18:17 left in the half.
  • With the game tied at 12-12, Robert Champion gave the Crusaders their first lead on a three-pointer with 12:19 left in the half followed by a jumper from Husek to put Holy Cross up 17-12.
  • With 9:47 left in the first half, sophomore guard Patrick Benzan beat the shot clock on an outside jumper that put the Crusaders up 21-14.
  • Champion gave the Crusaders their biggest lead of the half on a layup with 3:47 left to go for a 35-23 advantage.
  • The Crusaders maintained a 10-point lead going into the locker room after Alexander nailed two free throws to end the first half at 41-31.
  • Holy Cross went on a 6-0 run to give the Crusaders their biggest lead of the game at 53-39 with 13:08 to go.
  • Loyola answered with a 7-0 run to make the score 53-46 and cut the deficit to seven, the closest it had been since the first half.
  • With Holy Cross leading 57-46, the Greyhounds then went on an 8-0 run to cut the Crusader lead to 57-56, and after a basket by Champion, a three-pointer by Andre Walker tied it up at 59-59 with 4:50 left to go.
  • With 3:49 left in the game, Loyola took back the lead on another three-pointer by Walker to make it 62-59. 
  • Sophomore forward Karl Charles then brought the Crusaders within two on a foul shot, before Alexander hit two free throws to tie the game back up, 62-62 with 1:58 left in the game. 
  • Neither team scored again until only 3.9 seconds remained, when Thompson drained a free throw to make it 63-62 Holy Cross.
  • After the Crusaders forced the Greyhounds to throw away the inbound pass, Holy Cross ran out the clock to claim the one-point victory.

 

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

 

 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

 

  • Holy Cross hit 52.4 percent of its field goal attempts, 30.8 percent of its three-pointers and 75.0 percent of its free throws on the night.
  • The Greyhounds made 45.4 percent of their shots from the floor and 76.9 percent at the foul line.
  • Loyola held a 29-21 rebounding advantage, while the Crusaders recorded nine steals and four blocked shots.   
  • Champion finished the game with 13 points and five rebounds, while Husek added 12 points and three rebounds. 
  • Loyola was led by Walker with a game-high 17 points.

 

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

 

  • Prior to the contest, Champion was presented with a commemorative ball, after scoring his 1,000th career point during the game at American on Feb. 19.
  • The Crusaders are now all alone in fifth place in Patriot League standings at 9-8, just one game behind Navy.
  • Holy Cross still has a chance for the fourth seed in the Patriot League tournament, which would give the Crusaders a home game in the quarterfinals.
