WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior forward Jehyve Floyd posted career highs of 22 points and six blocked shots to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 60-57 victory over American at Bender Arena. The Crusaders improve to 6-14 on the season and 3-6 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Eagles fall to 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the conference.

Holy Cross made 59.5 percent of its field goal attempts and 46.2 percent of its three pointers, while holding a 31-19 rebounding advantage. American hit just 39.6 percent of its shots from the floor, but was able to connect on 87.5 percent of it free throws while forcing the Crusaders to commit 19 turnovers.

Freshman guard Caleb Green finished the night with 15 points, four assists and two rebounds, while junior guard Matt Zignorski added seven points and two boards. The Eagles were led by Sam Iorio with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • Following the contest, Floyd was selected as the Man of the Match presented by the United States Marines.
  • He totaled 18 points, six blocks, five rebounds and two assists, while hitting 10 of 13 field goal attempts.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close early on, with American holding an early 7-6 lead after the first five minutes of play.
  • Holy Cross scored the next seven points to pull in front, and was still up by six (20-14) with five minutes left before the break.
  • The Eagles came back to close out the half with an 11-3 run, claiming a 25-23 edge heading into the locker room.
  • The lead went back-and-forth early in the second half, and the Crusaders would hold a 52-51 advantage with six minutes left to play.
  • American scored the next four points to go back in front (55-52), before a layup by Floyd and a three-pointer by freshman forward Jacob Grandison gave Holy Cross the lead for good (57-55).
  • The Crusaders were clinging to a 58-57 advantage with less than a minute to go, before Grandison knocked down both ends of a one-and-one with 13.4 seconds remaining to make the score 60-57.
  • A three-pointer by James Washington was then off the mark on the Eagles’ final possession, as Holy Cross pulled out the victory.

  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders outrebounded their opponent for the first time this season, holding a 31-19 edge on the boards.
  • Holy Cross posted a season-best eight blocked shots, but also had a season-high 19 turnovers.
  • The Crusaders have now won their last three games against the Eagles, and lead the all-time series 21-19.
